Am I a bad mom?

My 6 month old english bully has an upset tummy and has been having VERY loose stools...not watery diaherra but loose muddy poo.  He is literally having a BM every 45 min to an hour, thankfully always outside, and every time he is, he comes in with a poopy butt that I have to wipe with baby wipes.  That being said, I crate him overnight and he has no accidents.  I have spent the last 2 days with him at home but had to run to the office today and was gone about 6 hours..no accidents.  Is it wrong to keep him in the crate some to control his pooping when I am home?  We never use the crate as a punishment and he goes in there on his own, but doesn't just go in there to sleep much.  FWIW...he started on flagil this afternoon for the loose stools and I have been feeding him rice w/his food but it hasn't really done the trick.

Re: Am I a bad mom?

  • When he holds it while in the crate, are his stools still loose when he does go?

Other ideas for loose stools- a table spoon of plain pumpkin, no food for 24 hours, then just rice (sort of mushy, like porridge), then if he firms up, add a little chicken, then go to food, but not for at least a day. Some people swear by giving a piece of white bread. Is he on a new food? How long has he been on this food? Does he have worms? How long he has had the loose stools?

As an aside, I dealt with constant loose stools with one of my pups, and eventually switched to grain free and chicken free food, and it helped tremendously.

I mean, I'm not above doing what I need to do to deal with constant pee and poo, but I would like to know why he has the poo problems in the first place.

    Good luck!

  • The stools firm up after he is in the crate and has had to hold it awhile. But then 30 min or so later, he wants to go out again and it gets progressivley softer w/each BM.  I took him to the vet....  No worms, no new food...they aren't too concerned because he isn't acting any different, just very gassy and poopy. Still plays like a puppy and eats, drinks, etc as normal. I tried to feed him just rice, but he threw it right up.  Do you think its ok to not feed him for a whole 24 hours?  I just heard about the pumpkin trick so I will look for that tomorrow.

I agree that my ultimate goal is to find out what is wrong.  I'm pretty concerned.  He would normal only go 2x a day, after meals like clockwork.  Last week he began going more and more frequently and then really over the weekend it got worse.  If hes not better w/the meds, I will bring him back in.  We feed him Kirkland and he has never had a problem with it.  Been on it for about 2 months now.

  • My vet always recommends 24 hours with no food when they get the runs. They won't starve to death, it's to give their stomachs a chance to recover, and if he eats twice a day, it's really just one missed meal. Just like when you have a stomach bug and just have liquids. Did you make the rice really, really mushy? And just a tablespoon or so at first.

That is so strange about getting progressively softer and more frequent. Are you willing to consider trying a new food?

My crazy pups always acted totally normally despite the runny stools, and I've done everything through trial and error.

  • Everyone has given you good advice- look at what food he's on, think about fasting 24 hours, add pumpkin or mashed sweet potatoes to his diet (this is what works well for us!)

    Poor guy!

I am not "glad" to hear that anyone else went through this but I am glad to hear I am not alone!  We are willing to change food...it just seems strange to me that he adjusted to well when we changed him from the breeders food to the Kirkland.  I will go and get some pumpkin and try your suggestion also.  It can't hurt...like you said, its really just one meal.  He's just a bulldog and every meal he gets he acts like he hasn't seen food in weeks:)

  • I don't blame you for trying to contain his messes by putting him in his crate.  You're doing good by feeding him rice, but if his bowels are that bad I would take away regular dog food all together for a while.  You can add boiled chicken or unsweetened sweet potatoes (baby food jars are perfect!) to help him get back on track.

If he keeps this up much longer, and you haven't already seen the vet, I probably would.  Constant diarrhea can lead to dehydration.  Also, I recommend the Bissel Little Green ProHeat Pet handheld carpet cleaner! This was a lifesaver when we were going through this with our "little girl".  Good luck!

Our American Bulldog had loose, frequent stool and was super gassy. We switched to grain-free, we currently feed Costco's Natures Domain and it really helped especially with the gas. It is about the price as the Kirkland.
