Bowel incontinence or something else?

It has been well established Laddie (my almost 11 year old collie) is bowel incontinent. Because he has low muscle tone in his rear (due to arthritis which is being managed by Deramaxx) he tends to poop in his sleep. I have seen it happen. No big deal, he is elderly, I just clean it up and wash the covers on his bed. He IS NOT urinary incontinent.

Yesterday though, right in front of me (after we had just been outside a little while) squatted and pooped while walking on the kitchen floor. This is NOT like him AT ALL.

What is your take on this as I am wondering if A) because he doesn't have the same feeling back there perhaps he didn't realize until the last minute he had to poop B) didn't have the strength to make it back outside or C) He really did just have an accident

I put him outside while I cleaned up / disinfected the kitchen. What are your thoughts?

You will forever be my best friend. I can almost feel our hugs. I will ensure everyone will know (now and in the future) what a genuine, kind, loving person you were...I already miss your laughter and our daily conversations. I love you, Samantha. May 20, 1983- February 20, 2012

Re: Bowel incontinence or something else?

  • my guess is he really couldn't help it.  It was too late when he realized he had to go and he doesn't have the control to be able to stop it.
