Travel to Dominican with Infants and Toddlers...?

We are thinking about booking an Easter vacation to the Dominican Republic.  The travel group would include a 2.5 year old and a 6 month year old.  I had concerns about malaria, dengue fever and cholera based on what I found online but I don't want to be alarmist.  My cousin's pediatrician (mom of 6 month year old) said it was fine but that baby is still exclusively nursing.  My pediatrician hasn't bothered calling me back but referred me to the CDC website - which is where I found some of the information on diseases there.  Anyway, long-winded way of asking if you have been there with children or have you been advised to not go?  Thanks so much for your insight!

  • I've sent a ton of people there and have never had to advise them of this.
Where in world would you like me to ship you? image My boys - I am so screwed in about 7 years. What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull? LIPSTICK !
  • We have a trip scheduled July 4th week and staying at an All Inclusive booked thru Denise (LadyRedLIght).  I sincerely hope there aren't issues like that there.  To be honest, I didn't even think about it.  H will be almost two when we go.

Ok, that is very comforting.  My SIL's pediatrician (in Toronto) advised them against going and that scared me a bit.  She advised Jamaica as the safest place.

  • We went in July 2010 and also booked our all-inclusive resort through Denise.  My son was 1.5 then.  There were warnings in the bathroom about not drinking the water when you brushed your teeth, but we just kept a bottle of water to rinse with.  Everything else was filtered at the resort.  We just came back with the worst mosquito bites that I've ever had and DS caught coxsackie, which was probably from the pool.  We had a great time and I'd definitely go back.

I usually dont think about stuff like this but my SIL's pediatrician advised them not to go there and that freaked me out.  However, my cousin's pediatrician said it was fine so I am confused.  Where are you staying?  We are thinking about the Hard Rock - looks great!

Thanks for sharing your experience.  I think the mosquito bites is what scares me since that is how the malaria and dengue fever are transmitted.  I am sure 99% of people are fine and the mosquito bites are harmless but that is my concern.  Where did you stay?

I'm definitely going to slather her with bug spray while we are there, that and suntan lotion.  Lots of both.  We are staying at the Melia Caribe Tropicale.  We looked at the Hard Rock, but it was a little too expensive.

  • We stayed at the Melia Caribe because I liked the family options they had.  We had some slight issues, but nothing major.  Malaria and dengue fever didn't worry me when we traveled and I believe the threat is still low.

  • LMAO!  I'm Dominican & I've been to DR 3 times since I've had my son.  I have stayed in a resort once during this time & twice with family, "amongst the people", lol....  We have never had an issue.  The only issue we have is that I'm allergic to mosquitos & I need to bring a bunch of bug spray.  My son & mh are not so they were fine.  I guess everyones experience is different and maybe I see things differently since thats where my famly is from.
  • I wouldn't be too concerned about it, especially if you are going to be at an all-inclusive resort, especially in P*nta Cana which is a top tourist destination in DR.

Malaria/Dengue-I went with a large group once to P. Cana and a family had taken malaria pills before and while there since they heard this risk. They ended up being sick for most of the vacation from the malaria pills and everyone else from the trip enjoyed a mosquito less vacation. Many times these diseases are in areas that are not heavily populated by tourists. Also, if you are still nervous, bring a bug spray that is safe to use on babies/toddlers.

Cholera-Because of the earthquake in Haiti and the lack of sanitary water, cholera spread in Haiti and a few people had come into Dominican Republic with the disease. Being at an all-inclusive resort you should not have any problem. Water is filtered and bottled. If you are nervous, use bottled water when brushing your teeth. Also, if you go out of the resort and eat/drink anywhere then make sure to drink only bottled water and try and avoid ice cubes in drinks and lettuce/vegetables (that may have been washed in water) if you are really nervous about it.

  • My coworker just went last month..had a fabulous time and came home healthy.
  • Thanks everyone.  This has been really helpful!  My pediatrician actually called back earlier and we discussed it.  He advised taking the malaria medication but didn't say it was an absolute must.  I am going to look into that a little bit but will probably go forward with booking the trip.  Thanks again!
