Getting fit ladies...

I am going grocery shopping today and am just curious if you actually buy any treats/junk food for yourself or your DH? Or do you keep your house completely junk-food-free? I think it would be really helpful for me if I didn't have the temptations lurking in the cupboard but I'm not sure how DH will feel about that, haha. Then again, I don't plan on going completely cold turkey and cutting out everything that isn't healthy, so I'm not sure what the best option is. What do you do?

Re: Getting fit ladies...

  • We don't keep any junk in the house. If we buy a bag of chips, we get the small bags and put a serving size on/in our plate/bowl. That way we aren't overeating them and they'll be gone faster = less temptation. H tends to only eat snacky type of food when he is at work, so generally our house is junk free.

I do, however, make some awesome homemade cheese-its and would be happy to share the recipe if you want! It is super easy and at least you know exactly what you're eating. :)

  • Homemade cheese-its sound amazing! I would love the recipe.

  • Please share this cheese its recipe.  If it were up to H, we would not have any junk food in the house.  I like to buy some sort of treat for us to have in the house.  I love chocolate so I like to buy M & Ms or hershey kisses so I can grab a couple to get over my craving.  We try not to buy chips.  Everyone once in a while I will buy pita or tortilla chips.  We definitely limit the amount of junk food in the house though.

  • I really think it has to do with how much self control you have, or how much you *think* you have.  I have zero, it has been tested many times and the conclusion is always the same.

So... we don't keep anything in the house that might make me derail.  The most exciting chips that we get are the healthy flax seed ones, or tortilla chips, we don't have ice cream in the house, etc.  It really makes you reconsider if you want ice cream to have to drive to the store and pay for it in single servings.

A couple of my changes/tricks. Instead of black pepper, I use red pepper flakes, they give a bit of spiciness, but not too much. Also, when rolling the dough out after chilling, put it between layers of wax paper. It won't stick to your rolling pin! Finally, I use a pizza cutter to cut strips & then squares. So. easy. Also, don't forget to poke a hole in the center (toothpick or with a wooden skewer) for venting purposes!

  • We try not to keep junk food in the house. We have pretzels instead of chips. The one treat we do have is mini ice cream sandwiches :) The mini ones are only 110 calories and they're already separated into serving sizes for you! I love having ice cream after dinner and I know I wouldn't measure out a serving :)
  • We rarely have junk food in the house. If we do buy it's because we're having movie night or something but we definitely don't buy it just to keep around.

We keep a lot of fruit and I bake snacks a lot. Muffins, hummas, dips, etc.

  • We don't keep any junk food in the house.  Right now, I think we have one bag of Terra Sweet Potato and Beet chips and some chocolate.  For snacks, we routinely eat Greek Yogurt or Cottage Cheese.  We do keep some fruit in the house for those really sweet cravings.
  • We keep a few things in the house...Stacey's Naked Pita Chips, Honey Wheat Pretzels, Kirkland (Costco) Trail Mix...for m salty crunchy cravings, and Cape Cod 40% reduced kettle cooked chips.

When I eat the pita chips or pretzels, I add veggies and hummus too.  The trail mix and chips are for my crave days.  I always stick to the serving size (trail mix is 3 tbls and chips are 23 chips).

lol, i just realized that i dont have a rolling pin!

  • I try not to keep junk food in the house but we always have popcorn because DH bought some from a boyscout and I bought some from a different boyscout... we also eat pita bread/chips with hummus and tortilla chips with salsa quite a bit but as far as junk food goes there are definitely worse things out there. i also keep chocolate in the house in the way of frozen fudge bars or chocolate pudding cups - it's better if they are prepackaged! :)
  • We don't really buy a lot of snack food in general so I don't keep a lot of junk food in the house.  Occasionally I will buy cheez its or wheat thins to pack in my lunch.   If I buy any type of chips H will eat them in a day or two - really he does that with most treats I buy so I just don't by stuff.  Its expensive and I never get any of it anyway! lol

Usually if I buy junk food its a treat and I just buy small amounts.

  • We don't keep anything in the house that I'd consider "junk food."  We have Triscuits and I usually have hummus or homemade ranch for veggies.  We also keep no sugar added ice cream sandwiches for Clay, but I'm not a fan.  I rarely want ice cream, but when I do, I get the no sugar added Blue Bell vanilla.  Clay ends up eating it, but if he didn't, one tub would last me six months.  On occasion, he'll bring home sugar free chocolate, but most of the time our sweet snacks are fruit.

  • With 2 teenage girls and a ten year old boy in the house, junk food is here.

H LOVES Aldi's chocolate. While standing in the pantry eating such chocolate, he told me to stop buying chocolate. So, I didn't. Then, a few days later he asked me "Where's my chocolate?"

I'm pretty good. I've never been a chip person, if I'm gonna splurge it is gonna be GOOD! French vanilla ice cream, chips and guacamole, wine! Oh and chocolate cake.

  • We don't keep very much junk food in the house.  H likes some kind of treat to take in his lunches every week, so we always buy just enough to get him through the week and no extra.  That way I know I can touch them because that would be taking away from H's lunch.  For snacks, I usually eat a slice of lowfat cheese or some sugar free Jello.
  • If we didn't have junk food we would make junk food. We have enough pantry staples to whip up a batch of cookies, monkey bread, cake, and other things at any given moment. Plus we both love baking, it's easier to have a little bit of junk food in the cupboard.
  • I don't keep much in the house, but I still have what was left over from before I started.  I LOVE and crave chips, so what I did was buy the 100 calorie packs of chips so I could take them for lunch and they were of course way less than what I had been packing myself!
  • We don't keep anything considered junk in the house. We do keep dark chocolate, but individual portions so no one goes crazy!

  • Most of the time, I don't keep any junk food here for myself. I am trying to make H eat healthier without him really noticing, so we have cut back on the amount we buy for him (as compared to what he would buy when he lived at his mom's). He refuses to eat a sandwich without chips, so for a while, we were buying the individual size bags, until I figured out how expensive they were! Now we buy one bag of chips per week, and he counts out the serving size and takes that with him to school for lunch. He knows if it's gone, it's gone, so he has to ration it throughout the week.

We have some candy here from Halloween, Christmas, etc. but we don't buy any new candy. Occasionally, I will bake something and keep that here until it's gone, but we don't buy cookies (other than the 100 calorie packs I take in my lunch at work). When I bake, it's usually to take to an event or someone's house, so we only have the leftovers here.

Wow, I just realized how well we're doing with junk food! =)

  • We usually keep chips or crackers in the house, but we aren't big snackers. I have also found that I really like having carrots instead of chips. They still have the crunch that I like. I also keep ice cream in the house, but we have had the same one since October, so we don't eat it that often. Generally, we're not home enough to really snack too much. I do know that my weaknesses are soda and popcorn. But I only eat stove popped popcorn using coconut oil and really only make it on a movie night occasionally. Soda is another story...if it is in the house I'll drink it. If we don't buy it, I won't.
  • I try not to keep any junk food in the house. We have snack foods but we try to keep them healthy, like greek yogurts, popcorn, cheese and crackers, etc. If there's candy or salty treats in the house then i'll gorge myself. I do allow myself to have junk every once in awhile, but I have to actually drive out to the store to get it.
