Has anyone taken klonopin for anxiety?

My doctor just prescribed this for me.  Have you taken it?  If so, what kinds of side effects did you notice, and how did you feel while you were taking it?

She also wants me to go on zoloft and see a therapist, but prescribed the klonopin to help me out until the zoloft starts to work.

If it matters, I go through these very anxious phases every once in a while where I obsessively worry aver things that I KNOW are not likely to happen - right now it's that Ryan has been sick and I assume the very worst.  He has a cold, is in school and doing fine, and I can't stop obsessing over whether the school is going to call me to pick him up, whether it is actually something worse than a cold, and every mark on him is freaking me out.  UGH.  Anxiety stinks.

Re: Has anyone taken klonopin for anxiety?

  • The quack psych who first prescribed me meds for my PPD put me on it (or something similar) when I was diagnosed. It helped relieve the anxiety while I waited the painful 6 weeks for the Paxil to take effect. God, I hate that man.

Anyway, it worked well for me. By the end of the day I took my first pill it had taken the edge off the anxiety and allowed me to function a bit. It made me VERY drowsy, though, so I recommend taking it at night.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Let me know if you want to chat off the boards.

  • MANY years ago, when I was in social work, I remember some of my clients complaining about it making them very drowsy.  All meds affect people differently though.  Hope it helps you.
  • have you been on meds before? I started Celexa in July for anxiety that was causing IBS issues for me.  It has helped a LOT.

I had anxiety about the same things - the kids being sick... i was constantly worrying, even when they were healthy- that they'd get sick and it would ruin xmas for them, etc...  and then i started having horrible IBS issues- so I was then sick all the time, making it even worse.

i'm on a low dose of celexa and i'm so glad i started it --- this winter is so much easier for me... sure, i worry-b ut normal mom worries- not anxiety.  I'm really glad I finally got on something.

i don't know about klonopin... but think it's great you went to your doc and are being proactive about it.  I hope it all works well for you.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • my mom takes klonopin daily for her anxiety. About a year ago, i had a bad stage of really bad anxiety and xanax wasnt cutting it. My mom let me have some of her klonopin and it was a miracle. It does make you very tired.. Besides that, there are no side effects at all. I hope you feel better soon!

This was me to a T. Ever since Hunter was in the hospital for RSV I became a germaphobe, hypocondriac. In September, I went on Zoloft. It has helped me tremendously. I also have Xanax for when I need it. Anxiety sucks. Hugs

  • Thanks everyone.  It really helps to know that I am not the only one struggling with this.

Yes, I've been on zoloft before - for 18 months after having PPD.  I did really well on it but didn't want to be on it indefinitely, mostly because we thought we were going to TTC.  We ended up not doing so, and I kind of wish I had never stopped taking it. The thought of starting it again actually gives me anxiety, LOL.

How I feel now isn't as bad as I was with my PPD - probably because I still need to go to work and function - but I went to the doctor right away because I know how bad I can get.  I've done well for the last 3+ years, but I know I am predisposed to this happening  :P
