Moms how to deal with the never ending clothing battle?

M is 4.5. She isn't super girly where she wants to always where a dress or anything. He prefers comfy, baggy fitting clothes. No big deal. I really don't care about that as long as she is dressed appropriately for the weather. But she does do ballet and gymnastics. Every week we go through the same fight...it's too tight, it gives me wedgies, it tickles my armpits. Yes all things she complains about. This week she was awful and we actually did not go to her gymnastics class, which in turn cause hunter to miss his mommy and me class at the same time. I tried to physically dress her but she just takes it off and falls to the floor. Yelling doesn work, talking about it doesn't work, taking things away didn't work. The kid stood naked in her room for over an hour and wouldn't get dressed. She finally came down in jeans and a shirt. But we missed her class. What am I supposed to do about this? I'm seriously thinking of taking her out of these activities if she can't deal with the clothes required for t. She doesn't seem to care anyways...thanks!

  • don't take her to class.  have her sit in the corner while you go to mommy & me class (or something equally as not fun).  then let her know this is her option.
proof that i make babies. jack, grace, and ben, in no particular order

Agreed. And if she doesn't go this round, don't sign her up for the next.

  • I bring her to class in her street clothes and have the dance teacher tell her she can't participate in class without the right clothes. Make her have to sit and watch the other girls have class and don't allow her to dance unless she wears the right clothes.

this, cant tell you all stuff we have missed because little people in house wouldnt listen and do what they are told. After a few times, they get the idea and do what theya re told.

  • Sounds to me like she isn't interested in the activities. Not a battle I'd pick. I'd make her attend the rest of the session on principle even if she sits on the sidelines because she isn't dressed appropriately and not sign her back up.

    I agree with this.

My daughter is a pain in the a$$ when it comes to doing her hair EXCEPT for ballet. It's the one time she'll sit there and not complain for a second and let me do her hair in a bun, etc. She knows she can't go to ballet w/out her hair being pulled back.

  • the only clothing rules Ava listens to are those that come from any adult other than her parents.

dance teacher made it clear that it's a black leotard, PLAIN white tights, black shoes, hair back - and she reminds me, especially that her hair must be back!

pajama day at daycare - DH, with the biggest smile ever, said "get up and let's go! no need to change our clothes today!" Ava told him that her teacher said only "clean" pajamas - not ones you slept in the night before. Huh? Dh changed her into new ones and asked the teacher that morning, and those were her instructions.

i'd speak to her instructors and have them lay out the law of the land. and then it's unfortunately a no-go if she can't cooperate.

  • Ugh!  We had this battle this morning becuase all of her 'soft pants' were dirty and I made her wear jeans to school.  I screamed at her today.  I had no idea I could scream like that.  I feel awful and realize now that it just isn't a battle worth fighting.  today, it did make us late for school today and i just don't know how to properly discipline for it, but i like other posters ideas of bringing her to class in regular clothes and having the teacher tell her to get dressed...
  • My daughter is 3 and she freaks out every day about her socks not being right or a myriad of other things clothes related.  We now ignore it and walk out of the room until she realizes she isn't getting anywhere with that attitude.
