Flea & Tick for indoor cat?

For those of you with an indoor cat and dog/s....do you use a topical flea and tick treatment for your cat if your dog is being treated? Just trying to decide if its necessary to keep our cat on it or not.

Re: Flea & Tick for indoor cat?

  • I haven't been, but I think I may have to suck it up and start giving them something. I found fleas on all 3 beasts last week, because I'd thought it was okay to stop treating Zoey for the winter; little did I know that because of the mild-ish weather, the fleas are thriving and worse than ever.

Zoey is back on flea/tick preventative (topical, K9 Advantix II). I'd prefer NOT to use a topical on the cats though. I might give them a few doses of Comfortis to make sure we nip the fleas in the bud, but with Zoey on a preventative at all times, fleas shouldn't be making it inside and to the cats with any hope of remaining alive, so I might quit then. I'd prefer not to be giving them anything if I can avoid it.

  • We do for a few reasons: 1) we have two dogs that do go outside daily and go to daycare regularly, 2) we are in an area that's high in fleas year-round and has a large population of ferals nearby, 3) we have a first-floor screened porch, where our cat is allowed to play.

I'll admit that when we were a single cat family with no outdoor porch, we only did flea treatments during the summer and seemed to be fine, but in our current situation it is really challenging to keep the fleas at bay, so we find it a must-do.

  • Since we never dip below freezing, we can have fleas all year round. I don't even have a dog, but we keep the cats on a topical, since I've had infestations when fleas have been tracked into the house and stuff.

  • No for the cats, I don't like to expose them to unnecessary chemicals.  Yes for the dog.

  • My vet recommends avoiding flea/tick preventative if you don't have a problem with them. We've never had an issue with it, so we don't put the unnecessary chemicals on our dog.
  • If we had a dog that went outside we would keep up with the Revolution all year round but currently just do it Spring and Summer when we are likely to bring something in on us or Mosquitos are around. We would never use anything that did not come from our vet. A lot of dangerous products on the market.
  • We didn't use anything for our indoor cats and then we got a bad infestation (we think that a guest tracked them in) We used the recommendations of the vet to get rid of them (capstar and frontline) and a month later reapplied everyone with frontline. We haven't done anything since then and *fingers crossed* haven't had any issues.
  • One of my cats has a flea allergy and is miserable if she gets just one bite so I treat her monthly year-round, but I don't treat the other two unless I find fleas.  I treat the dogs until the first hard frost.
