Tooth care

What do you do for your pets to ensure proper dental care?

I figure this is probably similar for cats and dogs, but for what it's worth, I'm asking because of my cat.

Re: Tooth care

  • I use "Plaque Off" in their food.  Works great.
  • I bought toothbrushes and toothpaste for my cats. Eastwood will. not. let. me. brush. his. teeth. I can't say I blame him, but when I got him from the shelter he had pretty bad periodontal (??) issues... (rotted tooth that has since been removed, some infection brewing, enflamed gums, bad breath) $700 later he's all fixed up, but the vet recommended that I begin brushing his teeth. HA! easier said than done.

Jack used to let me brush his teeth (Not like people brushing their teeth though, I just basically rub the paste over his teeth, not like a back-and-forth scrub.) he was a trooper about it, and he really never needed a cleaning at the vet. (The vet said he would probably need one in the next year at his last annual, but he passed before that. :-(...)

I'm going to start trying to brush Josey's teeth (tonight, perhaps?) since he just finished teething like two weeks ago, I wanted his gums to heal up and stuff before I start poking around in his mouth.

PP, I might have to ask the almighty google what plaque off is. You said it's working for you? (your cat(s) I mean...lol)

  • Raw meaty bones.

We feed a raw diet, and nothing cleans their teeth as well as gnawing on bones for their meals.

I use it for my dogs.  One has a dental disease (no enamel at all) and dentals cost over $1500 b/c a regular vet can't do them.  His teeth get covered in yuck. Plaque Off has taken about 90% of it off and he has not had to have a dental in three years.  Before he was getting them at least once a year, starting at 7 months old.

Also, I always have bullysticks and rolled cow cheeks from bestbullysticks.com. He can't have hard bones b/c his teeth will crumble.

  • I feed raw meaty bones, thick bully sticks, antlers, and I brush with a triple sided toothbrush with enzymatic tooth paste regularly.

I just bought a tub off amazon!I'm sorry, I said cat and not dog...my bad!! My cat had horrid dental problems when I adopted him--I hope this helps him as much as it helped your dog! Thanks again for this suggestion :-)

  • I bought a toothbrush and paste and could never convince Kitty and Lily it was a good idea. Thanks for reminding me that I should start with the kittens as soon as they are more comfortable here! I hope I have more success :-/
