Idea... please be honest

After getting some more feedback on my stretch mark poem, I want to [try to] publish one of my poems I've written for Wyatt into a children's book.

Here is a link to the poem that I put on pinterest:

Anyways, I can't draw or paint very well (at all), so I am considering going to my photog that did Wyatt's newbie shoot, and ask if I can go through all of her best newborn sleeping baby shots and pick some out for the pages in the book (getting written consent from the parents of course), giving her credit for the photography and listing the babies first names in the back of the book.

Do you think it would look good? Do you even think I could get this published? to be 100% honest I don't know where to start. Apparently there is a new company out of Edmonton, but I don't know how this works.

  • I think you write great poems. In one of my last classes in college, we discussed how to get published. I don't have the info on me right now, but from what I understand and remember, there are some self publishing website and/or poetry publications that you could submit individual poems.

If you are interested in a book, I believe the best way to get it published is to  pitch an idea to a publishing company and go from there.

  • If you want it pitched to a publishing company, you'll likely need an agent. Most publishing houses will only accept unsolicited manuscripts via an agent. I think googling should be able to give you some agent names/contacts in the childrens' book field and then you'd have to send them query letters.

I know Guardian Angel Publishing has an open submission period - one of my friends got published through them. They have specific book topics they look for, usually, but it might be worth checking out.

Or, you could go the self-publish route - but then you have to do all the promoting yourself... and that's usually the hardest part.

If it's something you really want to do, it's worth persuing. If you're only doing it on a whim/not really 100% in it, it's probably more effort than it's worth.

What about making it into a book for Wyatt via Shutterfly/Snapfish?

  • I don't have a clue about getting published, but I just wanted to tell you that I think it is an awesome idea and that I would buy a copy!

  • That's pretty cool.  I think you'd be better with illustrations, but maybe if you can find a publisher, they can find you an illustrator.

FYI - in the third line of the poem I think it's supposed to say "want" not "what" (maybe not, but it just doesn't read quite right to me)

yep, I noticed that when I was going through it a couple hours ago lol... before I submit anything I'll have to fix it. Thanks though!

I'm going to just look into it for now I think, and decide how serious I am about doing it :) Thanks for all of the opinions, ladies!

  • No help in the publishing department but I wanted to say that I love your poems. They are all so sincere.
