Mh and I are having our first baby next month and want to get a good camera (right now we just have a point and shoot) i had heard the Canon EOS Rebel was a good choice and i have seen alot of good review online, but thought i would get some feedback. Or does anyone has a good camera that they would recommend in the $300-$500 range? it would be mostly for baby and also traveling once we get back into that.

I have this too. Relatively new for me so I'm not fully able to use it well but it was better budget-wise for DH to buy for me as a Chanukah gift than the Canon.
Yeah that was the same reason I got it too. I don't know how to fully use it, but I do like it, and my mom has the D5100 so we can switch lenses.
The PowerShot SX40 HS is the best camera i have ever had. It has a 35x zoom and takes clear pictures from so far away. It takes great pictures even in low light. It is the best camera I could find for someone with little camera experience but still wanted amazing clear pictures.
It is just around $375. I did a lot of research and I love it.
in your range i would look at the canon T3. the T3i and the T2i are much higher than what you're looking for.
there's a local (well, local to me, they're in monsey NY) ebay seller that's called PMI digital (i think). i've been seriously looking at a camera from them.
i have the nikon d60. i really like it. If you only plan to use the lens it came with, then it is fine. if you decide one day to get more lenses, etc. the nikon D60 doesn't have autofocus in the body, only in the lenses. so sometimes the lenses are a lot more expensive. (The nikon D90 doesn't have this issue and i'm not sure about the 3000 or 5000 series). i got mine a few yrs ago and it was ~$500. (The D90 was a lot more expensive which is why i went w/the d60).
anyway, i just discovered the photography board on the bump. there seem to be some really knowledgeable people there. you may want to ask over there if you have more specifics.
The T3 is a decent starter, but the technology in the camera is old- you can also get a refurbished camera from Canon and get 20% off if you have an old canon camera to turn in- it is a way to get a better camera for less money- They will take any old canon camera, so even a beat up old point and shoot will get the 20% off-
