Anyone a structural engineer? We're under contract on a house, we had the home inspection. The inspector said that he found some small horizontal cracking in an area of cinderblocks, and that the front and back walls are "slightly out of plumb"
He recommended we get an engineer to come look at it, but that he didn't think it'd be anything to worry about.... but in the report it said it could be a significant structural problem. the home was built in 1951. it's a ranch with full basement
Obviously i can't expect anyone here to say "oh that's fine, don't worry about it"- i'm just wondering if generally speaking, we should run away before putting more money into it, or if it likely isn't a big deal.
ETA- we will be looking for an engineer- i'm not looking to get free internet service in lieu of a pair of qualified eyes. I'm just being antsy and have no idea if it's something to worry about or not.
Re: there are engineers here right?
im not a structural engineer.
when you say ranch with a full basement. is it a rambler. where the basement is essentially walk out?
we have a house in our neighborhood like that and they cannot sell it because of it (its now a rental) it has a crack in the foundation
a crack in the foundation would worry me especially if the walls are slightly out of plumb. but it could be nothing. it all depends on where it is.
i'd consider pulling based on what the SE has to say
not sure what a rambler is... only a very small amount of the basement is above the ground, like 1-2 feet of ceiling space maybe. it has bilco doors to walk out.
what stinks is my realtor is out of town until wednesday, and our septic inspection is scheduled for thursday. i'd like to get the engineer there first so that we don't waste 1000 on septic if the house is structurally unsound.
