I need some advice. When I found out that we were moving to Hatboro, I made the decision to switch from an OB practice that delivered at Bryn Mawr to one that delivers at Abington, because it's MUCH closer to our house. So I got a recommendation from a family member for Women's Health Care Group. My first appointment was this morning at their Huntingdon Valley office, which is the closest to our house. Everything was good, I liked the nurse practitioner I met, great.
But then I realized that to get back to work (in Ardmore), I had to drive 50 minutes through Northeast Philly. I can only imagine what it would be like trying to get to the office for an evening appointment at rush hour. Well over an hour I'm sure.
So now I'm feeling like an a-hole for not really thinking this through. A practice that's actually in our around Abington would be much more convenient, because it's between my house and work, whereas Huntingdon Valley is in the opposite direction. Not such a big deal when my appointments are every 4 weeks, but towards the end when I'm going more often, I feel like it's going to be a nightmare.
So do I look for (another) new practice, or do I just suck it up and deal with the driving and inconvenience?
Re: WWYD re: OB practice (long)
I wouldn't change the practice. I'm not sure what you do for a living, but would work be flexible for you and allow you to work from home for a half day on the days you have appointments?
It's recommended to get the first appointment of the day and/or the first appointment after lunch, so you aren't dealing with a dr that is running behind schedule.
Could you adjust your work day to come in later and work later to accommodate early AM appointments? Or, if you got the early afternoon appointment, could you work the rest of the day from home?
I'm sure you don't want to burn through sick time prior to maternity leave.
I could careless about a drive I care about the practice.
We drove from south philly to bryn mawr and it was nbd
Unfortunately my job is not all that flexible in terms of making up hours. I had the first appointment of the day today, and it still got me into work almost 2 hours late.
This may sound silly but are there other routes you could take to work from the doctor's office? I know sometimes a route that seems longer in distance may actually be quicker because of traffic, lights, etc. Definetly check Mapquest, etc. and I'm sure some of the ladies on here may be able to offer suggestions.
Also, I wouldn't change the practice. Perhaps schedule your appointment for the last appointment of the day where maybe you can go into work an hour earlier and work through lunch. I often find the morning appointments at any doctor's office are the worst. The doctors are never on time, and at the end of the day, they just want to get out of there, so they are usually quicker then .
I'm biased since we go to the same practice (good to see you today!) but I say stay put since you've already switched practices once. What happens if you switch again and you don't like the practice? You are already half way through your pregnancy so another office might have a hard time fitting you in.
If morning appointments are tough I know that at least on Wednesdays they have office hours until 9pm. And try not to book Zimmerman in the mornings. She's nice but is always running late.
Also, can you talk to your boss and just make them aware of the situation and how you are trying your best with scheduling appointments and maybe you could work through a couple lunches to make up time?
Lastly, check directions from the Oxford Ave office. It is already in the NE so it might be a closer drive to work.

I have no issue with the northeast, but it can be very slow in terms of traffic, especially at rush hour.
Yes, I saw Bridget, she was great.
The Lansdale office might be a little better, I'm not sure.
I'm calming down now, I was just sort of freaking out earlier and mad at myself for not thinking of this.
Eh I'm going to go against the grain and say start researching a switch.
You're barely halfway through - there's still time to make a change.
Once you start going every two weeks and every week, it's going to be annoying at best.
Also, if you ever have to go in b/c you have concerns, it's a very long drive - though as you get a little further they will just send you right to L&D at the hospital if you're having problems like lack of movement, etc.
The northeast is a black hole of traffic, I know, I live here
I like the practice a lot, and they're well regarded at Abington Hospital, so I say stay put. They have good hours, maybe a different time of day might help too?
It was good to see you too! Jack is adorable. That's good to know about Wednesdays. I think I'm going to try the Lansdale office for my next appointment and see if that's any better.
Thanks for the advice, everyone.
If your job is not too flexible I would definitely look at another office and worse comes the worst switch. The further you get along you will have more and more appointments and possibly some other issues which can be unforseen.
I think Lansdale would be a good option. You would be going against the grain of traffic from your house to Lansdale then can jump on the NE extension when you are finished. I say try that out and if it doesn't work possibly look at switching.
This was us, only replace s philly with phoenixville, still a haul
I'm going to agree with one of the others and say finding an office that is more convenient is going to be huge when your apt's start getting more and more frequent.
A few girls and myself use Womancare, and there is an office in Horsham, and an office in Abington (in the actual hospital) and they are just fantastic. You can feel free to ask any questions, but I was a huge fan of them.
