Might be adopting soon!

We currently have our one dog, Magic who is 6.

We've been thinking about adopting for awhile. My husband would really like to have a dachshund so we've been searching. I found a couple in a rescue a couple hours north of us and contacted them. Hopefully we can get the ball rolling and meet the cute puppies :) Here is a picture of one of the dogs we might adopt. She is about 10 months old.

ETA: Anyone want to give me some advice on crate training? I've never done it before and the foster home is working on it with her now. Thanks! Also, I've read tips on introducing dogs outside of the home to help ease territorial issues but anything else I should know?

Re: Might be adopting soon!

  • Cuuuuuuuuuuuute!!!!!!!!!!!!  We live next door to a mini doxie, and she is just precious (though very feisty)!

The FAQs (in the green banner at the top of the board) have great advice on crate training.  Essentially, the goal is to make the crate a happy, safe space for the dog.  You gradually introduce the dog to the crate, rewarding for small steps like going in with the door open, having the door shut for 10 seconds, and working up to longer periods of time.  You can also have super-special treats that the pup only receives in the crate (stuffed, frozen Kongs are a favorite).  The #1 most effective crate training trick for my dogs was the Crate Fairy - secretly leave treats in the crate for your dog to find later.  Skippy (who was almost 4 years old and not crate trained when we adopted him) was not a crate fan until the Crate Fairy came along.

Regarding introductions, I think the FAQs address that as well, but I always recommend introducing the dogs on neutral territory to avoid guarding issues.  I also like to take them for a walk together so they can get used to each other's presence in a non-confrontational way (meeting nose-to-nose is daunting to many dogs).

We also practice NILIF with our two dogs, and it has really helped us have a peaceful multi-dog household.  We've had 2 dogs for about 20 months, and we haven't had anything more than a minor tussle, which is great.  GL!

  • She's a cutie!  There is quite a bit of info on crate training in the FAQ in the green box at the top of this board.  I'd start there, and then if you have specific questions I'm sure one of our crate experts will chime in with some help!
  • Thanks to both of you...I always forget to look up there Wink
  • She's really cute. I'm not too familiar with the breed, but just be careful of letting her jump down from high places. She could hurt her back. Besides that, good luck. I hope it works out.

Yea, I've done lots of reading on the breed ever since DH started talking about wanting one. I also had a childhood friend with one and I have a few other friends with them so I've been around the breed. Thanks though Smile I'm excited! I just hope it works out!

  • Yay for adopting! :o)
