Question: ACL Surgery in dogs
It loks like my little uy may need ACL surgery. He's about 15 monhs. I know cost ad recovry vary, but about how much did he surgery cost, and how long was the recovery? Does your dog have any lastig damage frm the surgery/initial injury? Maxx tore his slipping running away from us (slipped out of harness to avoid getting into my big scary car. First ime he's done that).excuse he formatting, on my phone. TIA.
Re: Question: ACL Surgery in dogs
I have heard cost is around $2000, but that is for Boxers so I don't know if other breeds would make a difference.
One of our fosters had to have it and the recovery was several weeks, plus some exercises to do at home (kind of like rehab that you do yourself, stretching the leg out, etc.) He got 20 staples and had to be brought back to the vet around 4 weeks to have them removed.
His leg looks a little funny now but he certainly doesn't have any trouble getting around or running full speed in the backyard. We do notice that if he's been laying down for a while or if it's cold outside, it might take him a minute to get it "warmed up" again when he gets up, but I figure that's just like many people
Just like with ACL surgery in humans, there is no future maintenance needed once you make sure it has properly healed. However, and again this might be Boxer specific, I have heard that the likelihood of it happening to the other leg in the future is pretty high. Luckily, it only affects their back legs, so two times should be the max it would happen.
HTH. In dogs it's called TPLO surgery if you want to Google it.
Our last dog (lab mix) tore both of her ACL's but that was like 8 years ago so I'm sure the pricing has changed so I can't speak to that.
Not gonna lie, the recovery was hard work. Lots of restrictions for quite a while. But, both of the surgeries were successful. For us, the only "side effect" was that when our dog got older her arthritis was worse in the knees. But, when she was young she was very healthy and active.
And like the PP said, once a dog tears one knee there is a higher likelihood it will happen in the other....that was true for us! Our pup tore one knee when she was 1.5 years old and the other when she was 3.
Sorry this happened to your pup
.
Im so sorry for your baby! My Cooper has had both CCL's repaired.
He was about 5 @ the time of the 1st surgery, & about 65lbs. He lasted almost exactly a year before needing the opposite side repaired.
Each knee was about $900-1K, but we also chose extracapsular repair...& we live in WI, so things are generally less expensive here.
The recovery time was about the same as the pp's. We are continuing to have an issue w/the most recent knee (left), which has been nothing but trouble for us since about a week after the surgery when he developed an infection. So, even though its been well over a year since the 2nd surgery, he's still having problems.....we're still digging (for answers/info) & are optimistic....so far.
HTH, & GL! My best advice is to go w/your gut!! You know your dog, your lifestyle, your financial obligations...etc.
Know we're here for you if you need advice...or a shoulder to cry on! GL!
Aw, youre sweet! I was just hoping to reassure you that it will be ok! I was so scared when Cooper had his 1st surgery. I work in (human) Orthopedics, so its not like Im not used to "patients", but, caring for a family member is totally different than caring for a stranger! Not to mention, a dog vs a human!! Anyway no one in my family has ever had surgery before (besides my sister having foot surgery, but that wasn't major). So I had never cared for someone close to me post-op, & DH for SURELY hadn't, he was waaaayyyy clueless! Lol
Don't stress too much about the post-op care. For the 1st few days, they're so pooped out & on pain meds that they really don't do much but sleep. Crate confinement & activity restriction is a must (if no one has mentioned that already), so at 1st all the care he'll need is really leashed potty breaks (aside from food, water & pain meds).
Im so sorry you & your DH are in 2 places right now! Thats hard enough to deal w/!!
GL! & feel free to page or PM me if you have more questions, or just want to chat!!
I'll be thinking of you guys Tues!
