WWNA? (what would nesties ask?)

So there is a strong possibility that I'll be going to Australia for 6 weeks for work.

We have a conference call on Monday about it, and I'm supposed to come up with questions/concerns I have regarding the trip.  I know that I will have someone to drive me to and from the office so I don't have to drive.  Other than that, I know very little.  So far I have:

Will I have a kitchen(ette) for cooking dinner/breakfast?

Will my hotel/apartment be walking distance to a grocery store?  A laundromat?

What should I do about cell phone/calling home?  (I don't currently have a work phone, so they'll be picking up any tab I incur on my personal)

I know I'm missing questions, but i can think of any.  What would you want to know?

Re: WWNA? (what would nesties ask?)

  • How soon are you supposed to report for work once you land? (I'm horrible with jet lag,)

Will your work hours be approx the same while you are there?

  • What will your per diem be?
  • wow, that is an exciting travel opportunity! :)  I would certainly ask about the proximity of your housing arrangements to shopping, transportation (I'm assuming you'll want to go sight-seeing on the weekends during your time off!).  I would also be concerned about cell phone coverage (international long-distance rates) and whether or not they would be willing to cover this so that you can stay in contact with your family.

I don't know how important this is to you, but I would also want to make sure that your health insurance covers you overseas in a different country if you are going to be there for 6 weeks.  (ie: I have Kaiser here, but I'm pretty sure if I went to Austrailia and it wasn't an emergency, but I still needed to see a doc for strep, the flu, etc, how would it be covered?)

I would also want to know if you will get a spending allowance to cover your costs up front or if you will need to front the money & turn in an expense report after the fact...that might be quite a bit of cash to pay up front if that is any issue for you guys.

no identifiable siggy pictures anymore, thanks a lot stupid nest!
  • Is there a guest room so that my interwebz friends have a place to crash when they come to visit??  ;)

  • I'd wonder about my safety, what's the area like, if I have a driver are they strictly to and from work or can they help me get to the mall on the weekend.  Also, who's paying for your work visa and such?  If my passport wasn't current who's paying for that?

    Very cool experience!!

  • I think the ladies above have given you great things to ask about.  Congrats on this opportunity and I am so jealous!

As far as a recommendation for a cell phone to use while over there... I think it is cheaper to just buy a phone there with a plan and have your company pay for it.  Too risky in my experience to try and use your own phone and change the plan (both Verizon and TMobile have messed this up big time when I have traveled).

You can get skype on your computer for free calling back to home.

    Have fun!

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

  • How fun.  I would also ask about amenities where you will be staying.  Things like is there an exercise facility available, coffee pot?, internet access?
  • Thanks ladies!

I have a company AMEX, so expenses will all be on there (yes, too much out of pocket to do that).  I will check with HR regarding the insurance, but I think I should be covered (great question though!)

As for you all coming to visit... that would be awesome!

  • I think the PPs have covered a lot of good questions to ask, but I've lived in Australia recently and wouldn't mind offering some insights if you PM me. Where will you be?
  • I would ask them if it's ok for you to host ESCC while you're down there! Big Smile
