ok...first stomach virus...what do I do???

Grace has been throwing up for about 2 hours, the bulk of it the first time before I got home from work, but H said it was a lot.  I gave her some toast and that came up almost right away so obviously I guess I don't try to feed her right now?  She's been throwing up small amounts of liquid, about 3 times, 15-20 minutes apart.
What do I do?  I honestly have no clue.  She's sleeping on her little couch bed right now in the living room where for now I plan on staying down here for the night.  Do I not give her anything?  Wait for a certain amount of time she hasn't thrown up for?  So glad I'm off this weekend so I can just spend time w/ her :(

Re: ok...first stomach virus...what do I do???

  • Don't try and feed her...you need her to drink liquids.  Ice pops, Gatorade, anything.  M was hospitalized with this last year and it was awful.  The main thing is liquids....she might puke it up, but at least it's getting in there.  It's a good sign that she's sleeping...M couldn't even do that for more than 15 mins without puking for 12 hours straight.  Don't give her food until she asks for it or until she's done puking for a decent amount of time, and then do the BRAT diet.

  • as the PP said, all they care about is liquids, and make sure she has a decently wet diaper every 6 hours.  Give her anything she will drink; juice, water, pedialyte, ice pops, etc.  I wouldn't give regular milk b/c that will upset her stomach, but we did lactaid and that seemed ok.  I wouldn't give her food unless she wants it.  Just focus on liquids.  Good luck, I hate the stomach virus!
  • Do not feed or give liquids for at least 12 hours if she is vomiting everything.

After 12 hours try her with a lollipop - the best we have used at the Charm pops - I bet they have some Valentines ones out now.

After that Ice chips - an hour later.

Then a small sip of water - an hour later.

The introduce food using the BRAT Diet:

    Bananas

    Rice

    Applesauce

    Toast

If you give her liquids or anything too early it will keep the virus alive and make her sickness last longer.  It is hard to watch them ask for liquids but do not cave in it is for the best.

  • Also call the doctor - ask them about liquids... I come form a family of vomiters and our doctor always said no liquids for a certain amount of time... if the child is peeing, has tears and saliva in their mouth they are hydrated

  • Our doc had us give pedialyte but only 1oz at a time to keep him hydrated. give the ped a call for an opinion but hydration is key. I can't imagine my doc telling me to go 12 hours without giving liquids.

  • It was definitely 12 hours because it was at night - it was insane but after 36 hours of vomitting we would try anything.. but definitely made sure she was hydrated.

  • When DD1 (around 10 months at the time) had the stomach bug a few yrs back and was vomiting non stop from the time I got home and we brought her to after hours at our doctors, and she was throwing up even the tylenol & ibuprofren they gave to bring her fever down, we ended up at the ER (Capital Health) where she got an IV - thankfully she stopped throwing up at the time and slept through most of it.  The worst part was the catheter they had to give her to empty her bladder - she hadn't peed and they didn't want to release us until she had a wet diaper and knew it was full by doing an u/s.  Anyways, we were sent home with instructions on giving her small doses of pedialyte (gatorade) every 10 minutes in the beginning to make sure she kept some down and then to do the BRAT diet once she felt better.  I also agree with pp about not giving milk right away, and we were also told yogurt was good when they had their appetite back to help with the probiotics.  I hope she feels better soon, I know it will be a long night for Mommy too - hang in there.

  • awe, poor thing!  They are THE WORST. In so many ways.

Just keep trying to get a LITTLE bit of water/juice into her to keep her hydrated... but avoid dairy.  If she is keeping stuff down tomorrow do BRAT - bananas rice applesauce (though some don't do this) and toast... we also do crackers.

Gray was just puking the other day. We lay tons of blankets and towels on the couch and I sit up with him all night (try to sleep, but rarely do) and keep a bucket nearby to TRY and catch the puke... ugh. It's just so miserable.

i hope she's better in the am and it's passing quickly!

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.
