Gymboree Classes

Would you suggest Play & Learn or music?  Georgia is 8 months old.

Any other "classes" you suggest for a baby her age?  We have playgroups, I'm looking for something on a weekly basis that's somewhat structured.

Re: Gymboree Classes

  • We do The Little Gym every week and it is great!  Love it.  I am sure it is very similar...it all depends on your teacher though.

  • Finley didn't start Gymboree until she was 2, she really loved it, but it didn't hold her attention for very long...less than 6 months.  I am not sure if she would have gotten much from it at 8 months.  We did the Play and Learn classes.

  • We started at The Little Gym at 10 months. She loves loves loves it, but I think 8 months might be a little young. I would wait until she is fully crawling/almost walking.

I disagree.  We started at 8 months and that was the perfect time. Until then she had no desire to crawl, but once she was around other babies that could she wanted to learn and did a month later.  She still isn't walking but still loves going!

  • Play & Learn. Music requires them to sit in the circle, which just doesn't make sense. As soon as she's crawling, the Play & Learn will be more appealing to both of you. Plus, P&L is more social for the parents. P&L has music and singing, anyway.

Good point. We started at 10 months and she was walking 2 weeks later. It was really easy for her to walk on that floor.

  • We do play & learn level 1, and soon will be doing level 2. Its nice to get out to the classes. DS likes most of it, he gets a little grumpy during massage when things slow down a bit, and he sometimes doesn't like to give back the "object" they are playing with... Ive found the level 1 classes good for getting in tummy time and learning ideas of things to do. We still do lots of music things so its a bit of a mixture at the moment.

We'll stick with play and learn for a while, and then add music in a few months. Music level 1 goes from 6 to 16 months so there is a much larger age range than the gym classes, so for us starting at 6 months he would probably get bored if we kept going until he was 16 months!

Which ever class you do Im pretty sure you get to go to the open gym time once they are older than 6 months - another reason to do the gym classes as it give you an idea of what to do!

  • Thanks ladies!  Think we will try Play & Learn.  She is on the brink of crawling (has been army crawling for about a month) and started trying to pull up this weekend.  I didn't realize Music was circle time...there's no way I could keep her corralled and sitting for more than a few minutes, she is way too busy for that!

I would love to hear any other activities we should try at this age.  We start swim lessons at 12 months (mommy & me, probably just splashing around) and MDO next fall, one or two days a week.

  • Also look into The Motherhood Center. They have a few classes there as well. We did the music class with Ds from age 2 to 3. They have classes for babies also. Many of the songs had movement involved so we got up and danced around a lot which was better than sitting around a circle for the entire class.

  • We started DS in Play & Learn at 6 months. He was just starting to crawl. It helped push him over though. We didnt like "music" as much as play and learn. he went for a yr and half.
  • We are starting swimming this coming weekend with Houston Swim Club in Katy. They can start as early as 4 months there. And the pool is warm @ 92F I think. We are both big swimmers so we want DS to get used to the water early. DH will be in the water with him though I think at least at the beginning.

We are also doing baby bootcamp but that is for me! He is mostly (well at the moment totally) in the stroller for the whole hour. Sometimes he naps sometimes he doesn't. It is a pretty hard workout, well I find it hard after not doing anything for over a year, I used to do bootcamp type classes before I was pregnant too. I like getting us both outside in the fresh air a bit.

At the moment though Im just trying to stick to one activity a day, I was trying to do bootcamp and gymboree on the same day but it was too much for me!... never mind DS!! I need to remember to have down days too. Im exhausted at the moment, so this week will be a quiet one!

I did see a yoga and baby class out in Katy. Haven't investigated that though.

Id be interested in hearing about other classes too!.... and any MDO that people recommend particularly in West Houston/ Energy Corridor area...

  • We will be starting play and learn next month. In my household we love music. I play the piano and Dh knows how to play the guitar. I've already been letting Layla hit the keys since several months ago. So I plan on showing her music. They also have baby story time at libraries which is another fun thing you can do with your LO.

  • We started Gymboree classes right about 10-12 months, I believe. We did Play & Learn. I feel like Play & Learn is much more suited to mobile babies. (crawling, at least) We did several sessions up until she was about 2, at which time other activities were a bit more stimulating for her. If you are going to the Galleria/Post Oak location, I recommend Sherri, if she is still an instructor there. She was FANTASTIC!

Prior to that,we did Kindermusik (starting at 6 months) which was VERY appropriate for the non-mobile baby. We sang, did lots of movements, played with scarves & instruments, etc.

We also started swim lessons at 4 months.K became a fish from early on!

I highly recommend Mr Chris at Houston Swim Club in Pearland.  He is amazing.  Best lesson we have given F so far (besides ski from my BFF! Sorry for the silliness but I have had three glasses of wine at altitude and I am loopy)

We are in Vail now.  F has been passed out since 7 pm.  Skiing wears her out and she loves it.  My BFF lives in Vail and we are staying at her house without DH.  After this trip, we will probably be back before the end of the season. F is taken with skiing and BFF has been amazing with her.  She teaches at Beaver Creek to get a free ski pass (speech pathologist in the off season =)

I am fairly sure we will be back here, or in Aspen or Telluride (DH has co-workers with houses in both) before the end of the season.  F loves the snow.  I asked her whether she likes skiing or Disney better and she said skiing. Her face lights up as they go down the mountain.  And she gets essentially private lessons from BFF combined with free housing, so I think we can convince non-skiing DH to come up in March/April.

Oh, that sounds amazing! What an awesome hook-up that your BFF is a ski-instructor! I bet F is SOOOOOO cute skiing down the mountain!

I've been to Aspen in March (never been to Telluride) and the weather is wonderful! Surely you can twist DH's arm!

I can so relate to the feeling of exhaustion, though! The only symptom I had of altitude sickness was being super tired really early (like 8pm) which is so unlike my normal night-owl self! Vail is so high up!

Oh, I LOVE Colorado! Love, love, love it!

I bet K was equally cute!

I have not had any sickness other than wine making me loopy way before it should =)

BFF has been SO good with F.  Since she works with kids in her real job and ski school, she knows all the tricks.  Best of all she said she would advance F if she were in her ski school class, so I know that means DH will want to see her ski.  He has never skiied, so I am wary of that...

I think Telluride is too advanced, Aspen would be fun but BFF would have to travel to meet us, Vail would be perfect but DH would feel awkward staying with BFF.  RC is in Beaver Creek, right?  I really liked it there for beginners.  We are in the BC gondola in my sig pic.  Though I did like the Vail views better than BC.  BC cookies at 3pm were amazing =)

  • I got married in Telluride, so it's always my top choice. :)

I can't wait to take G skiing next winter.  FIL was a champion skiier in his youth so he will be teaching her, she will be too young for the babycare classes anyway.
