While I do not defend him at all, and think what he did was definitely wrong, I think comparing him to Jeffery Dahmer and Charles Manson or a monster is also wrong.  He is not the one who committed the crimes.  That man is a monster.  What Joe Paterno did was a HUGE error in judgement.

I agree.  JoePa did not commit the crimes.  He reported them.  And quite frankly, he reported hearsay.  He didn't see anything.  Yes, I completely believe he should have done more. But it was the whole system that failed, not just one person.  The one guy showed up at his door one night and said Sandusky was molesting boys in the locker room - why didn't that guy do something right then!!!????  He was a big football player and he walked away and went to go tell JoePa?  Again, yes, JoePa should have done more.  But so should a lot of other people.  But we don't really know those people well (we don't even know who a lot of them are) so JoePa is taking all the blame.  The man loved Penn State and he loved his players.  He had one of the highest graduation rates of any football program.  In his last interview, he was so remorseful about the whole situation.  I know that doesn't make up for it but  I don't believe he deserves to be compared to completely evil people like Jeffrey Dahmer or Charles Mason.  But then again, I'll leave  judgement up to God.

I don't believe in God so I'm going to go ahead and judge him now.

Graduation rates, remorse and all of that bullshit don't mean a damn thing to any of the children who were abused. And I'm sure none of their parents care about it either. Nor would you if that was your son.

I agree with you on one point though. The whole system failed. Every single person who knew, suspected, thought, or heard something is just as guilty as JoePa. They all deserve to rot in hell. Turning your back on abuse is disgusting. Turning your back on abuse in the name of a sport, in the name of a college is even more disgusting.

  • To Penn State, Joe P was God...as several people have pointed out. He could have and should have done more and chose not to. If this is all he Is ever remembered for then so be it...he brought it on himself.  I agree with Tara....if this was your child.....

    heresay

First, that is not hearsay & hearsay is a term used in court and doesn't apply here at all. When this case goes to court they would simply call the person who saw the abuse occur and JoePa to testify this person told him the abuse occurred & it wouldn't be hearsay.  Also, If someone came up to you and told you "I just saw a fire in the building, I think we should leave" - you are not going to say "well that's hearsay, I didn't see it happen, so I will just sit here at my desk".

Also just because more than one person dropped the ball doesn't make it all okay for JoePa to drop the ball.

  • With all of this rage against Joe Paterno, I'm surprised I never saw one mention of Bernie Fine on here at all and all the people including his wife who knew about the abuse for a decade or more before it was reported.

he was very good the university and made generally, a very positive influence. ..

    um ok

i'm sure those boys feel the same way.

I'm sick of hearing about him, he was not a good man, if you ask me.  I wish they'd stop glorifying him, he was a douche...he overlooked the sexual abuse of little boys, that's a SICK PERSON.

Because I'm pretty sure no one is calling Bernie Fine a hero and having rallies and vigils for him. IMO he should be strung up by his balls and then some. But, again, no one is talking about what a great man he is or what he's done for the school.

    Exactly.

  • I don't follow football and watch even less college football. The way I see it, they all had a responsibility to protect those boys to the fullest extent possible. Joe Paterno was the face of that program. He has/had to be prepared to take the good with the bad. He accepted the praise heaped on him for all of the good the program was responsible for but he must also take the responsibilty and anger for this situation. He doesn't get immunity. He can't be all powerful and powerless at the same time.

    well said-

for all those that are so enthralled with him and think he just made a mistake, what if that mistake caused YOUR child to be abused and molested by Sandusky? How would you feel about him then- He knew these things were happening and allowed himself to remain quiet! He allowed the administration to sweep it under the rug and he allowed whats his name, the GA, to stay quiet too-

So, go praise him all you want, and I hope and pray that you are never victims to a man such as him- we'll see if you will be singing praises then! The good he did, no longer matters!

Most of you have no idea what you are talking about.  Joe donated millions of dollars to the university, and there is a great library that was built with his donations.  I'm not talking about football at all.  And yes, what he did or didn't do, was horrible.  But, he did do some good things as well, and that is how I choose to remember him.  Say what you will, everyone is entitled to their opinions.

all this from the person who was going to fire her cleaning lady/baby sitter for nicking her daughter's fine while trimming her nails because you wouldn't do it...you are one sadlyfuckedup woman...so his millions donated to the school makes the continuace of rape of boys okay..how would you feel if it was your daughter raped..would you still be singing praises for him

Missy,, this is not some poor trashy kid, this was HER baby. You're not allowed to let someone get away with making a rich baby bleed, FFS. Let your friends rape the underprivelidged kids all you want but don't let a rich baby spill a drop of blood!

Yes, a library definitely makes up for knowing abuse was going on and not reporting it to the police...and everyone who's defending him, I don't understand how you can be a parent and DEFEND this man who did so much harm to so many boys...not just him, I blame MANY people at Penn State for their negligence, but he was among them...and him dying doesn't make things all better.

It's a sad fuckked up world when we place FOOTBALL above the safety of children.

  • WTF is in the Penn State Kool-Aide that makes everyone so irrationally in love with this man? It can't possibly just be football statics. It just can't. Cause if it is all hope for man kind is lost.

Lauren, I needed this laugh!! I remember the post about firing the babysitter because of the princess' nail. Seriously, what is wrong with people defending this a$$H. I mean, he is/was as guilty as the person committing the crime. It doesn't matter how "good" he did to the university financially or how he contributed to gain a good reputation to the university. He also contributed to mess up children's lives for ever. As such he will be remembered in my book.
