My kitty has an eye ulcer. Advise?

Hi,

I am new to the nest-not married yet-but post sometimes on the knot. I took my cat Pumpkin to the vet today because one of her eyes was closed for some of the day yesterday and this morning. She was diagnosed with dry eyes and has an ulcer on one of her corneas. The vet gave me an antibiotic eye ointment, cyclosporin (Optimmune), and told me to get some human drops called Genteal. In total, she is getting 5 drops over the course of the day in her "good eye" and 8 drops in the eye with the ulcer. So far, she is miserable getting the drops. She runs away when we try to pick her up to get her situated to give the drops, and we have to wait at least 15 minutes between different sets of drops. As we get to the second and third sets of drops, she gets more scared and hides further under the bed. Anyone ever dealt with kitty eye problems and given cats eye drops? Oh, and they said I will have to use one of the drops long term AKA forever.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

  • One of my dogs gets drops and ointment 2x daily. She runs when she sees them in my hand, for the last 6 years. Eye problems can last, I would see a veterinary opthamologist for a 2nd opinion. In the meantime have someone help you hold her and make sure she gets all her meds. An eye ulcer sounds like it definitely could use some serious meds and painkillers. GL.

  • I have two kitties both had eye issues and what time or another. They have both gotten drops as well as this neosporin type stuff. The best thing I did with the one that would not sit still is go to the bathroom with your kitty, then get a towel or soft blanket and wrap them up in it. My kitty liked it cause he thought he was safe and cuddled. they also cant scratch you this way. Make sure you get the feet in the towel.

  • My cats have needed ointment in their eyes for infections and they hate it. Going quickly and getting it over with makes it much better though. I would kind of straddle them while kneeling so that they were trapped between my legs and I'd sit back on my feet so that they couldn't back up. This leaves both hands free. Then I'd use one hand to hold their head and the other to administer the ointment. I'd finish up with an awesome treat. GL

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone. It helps to know that other people have dealt with this before. So far, I have had some help from my fiance, but I know starting tomorrow he wont be around to help at the times when I need to give the drops. So, I tried on my own this morning. The first set, I managed to do without using a towel. The second set, I needed a towel for it. I just hate that I am putting her through all this-for her own good- but she does not know that. Once we get the ulcer healed, I am going to see a cat eye specialist to figure out if/when/how long we need to do the long term drops. Thanks again everyone!
