Chew bones?

Our dog Magic has never been much of a chewer and got a bully stick for Christmas and still has about half of it left. With the possibility of bring a puppy home next weekend, what would be some good bones for her to chew on? She's a dachshund and about 10 months old. I know years ago we gave our Cocker Spaniel nylabones but I've heard conflicting info about them since. Can you point me to something that would be good for the puppy that will last a little while? Also, what are some good toys? Magic has never liked toys either...he's boring as my kids call him Stick out tongue

Re: Chew bones?

  • I've had some dogs that are really intense chewers and Nylabone and Kong are about the only thing that lasts longer than a day... and not everything Kong or Nylabone either.

My friend has dachshunds and said they tend to pull stuffing out of plush toys.  I would say get a durable Kong or Nylabone in puppy size for something that will last, and enhance your collection of toys with a variety of cheapies that will keep him entertained.  Having variety seems to keep them from getting bored of what they are supposed to be chewing on and off of what they aren't!  Puppies in general, never had a dachshund myself.

  • Kongs are good.   You can fill them with whatever you like..........treats, kibble, yogurt, peanut butter, whatever.

We give out dachshunds baked pork skin bones.    They look like rawhide, but supposedly, they digest a lot easier than rawhide (in a few hours, instead of a few days), so you don't have to worry if they swallow a big piece.   The brand we have right now is "Pork Chomps".........you can buy it at Petsmart.
