Moms of 2 VERY close in age re: shopping

How do you do it?  Friday was my first experience taking the 2 of them shopping without Genevieve in the infant carrier (we just moved her to a convertable car seat). The only shopping carts that fit 2 in the front are at Costco and I obviously can't do all my shopping there.  Josie will not stay in those carts that have the front car for the kids (besides my local market does not have them) and I can't keep her in the basket part because she either stands up or crushes my groceries. Im kind of at a loss here....lol! And yes, this is pretty much something I need to do with them.  The last thing I'm doing is grocery shopping after they're in bed because I go to sleep about an hour after Josie and the closest store is 20 minutes away. And when my husband gets home it's a whirlwind of dinner, playing with them (for him) and bath. Weekends are usually pretty busy too so....leash her for the store?  What do you do?

  • I'd absolutely have groceries delivered.  SO worth the extra money and saved aggravation!

  • I went either on the weekends: Saturday evening or Sunday early am. There were days that I had to go with the 2 of them and I had Sal sit in the front, Bella was in the cart for a bit and when it started to get full she got out and walked next to me. I found that having snacks and drinks made it a bit easier.
  • my supermarket has a play area for kids that parents can drop them off while they shop...is that an option??  Could you try giving your 2 y/o a list of items she has to "help" you get...that may keep her distracted and have the 1y/o sitting in the cart.

my kids are further apart in age and I have only been out with both alone a handful of times...I am too chicken!  LOL  GL

  • I did as much shopping at costco. and then I had a sitter come so I could do all of my errands I couldnt do with my 2 kids. It was rough everytime I tried, but in the end there just was no way around it. My son was too young to walk. He had sat in the cart part and I put groceries around him, but once he started to feel crowded I was done shopping. I found it to be the absolute hardest thing to navigate with 2 small kids. Thankfully my parents were willing to come once a week and i would get so much done in those few hours because I wasnt taking 2 kids in and out of the car, dealing with snacks, & trying to keep everyone happy

I guess when I go to Shoprite I could try putting her in the play room (again my local place is no frills), at least to leave the older one.  I thought I heard once that kids needed to be PT'd to go in there, is that true?

    I don't have a choice! It's all me, all day! ;)

  • Shoprite at Home. Best money spent each week. I've been doing it for over 3 years.

  • If I didn't need a lot I'd put one in the front of the cart and one on the cart itself. If I needed a lot I'd keep them in the stroller and drag the cart behind me.

I am not sure, I have never dropped my kids off..again, rarely venture out with both and have NEVER gone to the supermarket with both!  LOL  I am sure you can call and they can give you info.  Also, could you wear the baby in a Bjorn or something similar?  Then place J in the cart.

  • Oh I also once saw a mom who pushed a stroller and a shopping cart. She had 4 kids with her-2 very young, one in the cart and one walking. Atleast if they are in the stroller they are confined and can eat snacks, etc.
  • i take all 3 with me when i need to go, so i use my double stroller, with Ellie and Owen, and Landon walks. i give them snacks to occupy them. i drop Landon off at the kids area in wegmans and he loves it. i fit as many groceries under the stroller as i can and carry my diaper bag on my arm/back to make more room for the groceries in the stroller or i bring a canvas bag with me, putting items in that, which i hang from the hook thing i have on my stroller. i should mention that i never have to do a huge shopping list with the kids because Pete brings stuff home when i need it.

  • We wait until the weekend to do grocery shopping and we put the boys in a stroller and my dh pushes the cart and I push the stroller.  Or one watches the kids while the other goes shopping. It sucks to do it every weekend but we don't have any other choice.  Sometimes I pick up a  few groceries on my lunch hour at work to bring home later.

I have seen others push a stroller and cart at the same time.

  • I bring my double, and push the cart with the other hand.  This is one of the main reasons why I got the double that I got (city mini) - since I can push the stroller with one hand.

I do a full shopping this way.  I really have no choice - unless I wait until after the kids go to bed.  I have done this, and it is great.  But, usually not possible

  • I take both of my kids all the time. When they were you nger I used the front carrier. Once they got older I would put DD (my older one) in the catr an d stack things around her. Once she was a better listener I got a handle I could strap to the cart that she could hold:

Now DD will walk next to me.

Since I am pregnant again DH normally goes and picks a few things up if we need it and we now often do big shopping trips together.

Just remember ir is a few years of this and it will get much better when both girls are walking - though when they go in different directions that is a whole different stress!

  • seriously...pushing a double stroller AND a shopping cart..you ladies are amazing.  now I feel like a jerk for being such a chicken!  lol
  • When Emma was little I used to put her in the moby wrap or bjorn and wear her while Julia rode in the seat of the cart. When she got bigger Julia was old enough to walk and stay with me. But we don't do huge shopping just the three of us because I have no way to get the kids plus the groceries from the car to the apartment by myself. Now Julia's in preschool, so if I really need to shop during the week I go with just Emma while Julia's at school. Generally I try to get it done during the weekend.

I would love to use delivery, but the only store offering it in the city is crazy overpriced even by city price standards, so it's impossible to realistically use (we've used it in a real pinch a few times but not as a regular thing).

  • We do grocery delivery, or if I take both my son rides in the seat and A in the cart. There is a dunkim donuts in shoprite so she gets a donut and he gets a bagel and I quickly get as much as I can before they get antsy. I don't do a big grocery shopping with them, if I need to that I go at night or on the weekend.

  • I have some things delivered. I go with them for fruit, veggies, and meat. I don't like someone picking those out.

When we go the food store we are a circus act. I put Sofia and Ava in the choo choo wagon and pull that with one hand. I put Gia in the top of the cart and push the cart with the other hand. I bring a snack and a drink for everyone.

  • Mine are further apart but I still had the shopping cart issue because M is a runner. I used to put S in my backpack carrier and M in the cart. I still put S in the backpack if I want full use of my cart.
  • I might be VERY mistaken, but I thought you said you found a mother's helper recently?  Maybe you could bring her with you and she could push one of the girls in the stroller?  Just a thought.

Dont worry I would never have attempted that either. I would have rather waited and gone at 9pm when the kids were asleep and the house cleaned up, then try to haul the stroller/cart/kids around. If I had to do it again, now that there is peapod, I would likely have just let the groceries come to me

  • Is Genevieve light enough that you can carry her in the Bjorn and put Josie in the front part of the cart? That was how I did it until Frankie got too heavy.

  • sorry, not the target responder, but does your shoprite have the service where you can place an order online, and they will pick everything out for you, then you just pick it up at the store...that would cut a bulk of the work out for you...you can zip in with the girls, grab your produce and meats, everything else will be in a cart at the front of the store waiting for you...

You are not mistaken! I did get a local girl one time & she was great.  That may be something to consider, great idea!

I totally agree..not the you being dumb but the Nest always being so helpful with this kinda stuff!  LOL

  • Not sure what Shoprite you are going to but the one in Greenwich/Pburg will not take the kids until they are 3 in the play area.  I tried when Alex was younger.  They do the online shopping there where they bring the stuff to your car.

  • I don't have two kids but there are plenty of weekends my husband goes to the supermarket while I'm putting K to bed on Friday nights. Our store is open 24/7 so he can go whenever. He does this on weekends when we have too much other stuff going on to go Saturday or Sunday.
  • We go mostly every Monday morning, just me & the girls since Maeve was relatively a newborn. What works for me, are the car carts. I strap Mo into the car section and place Maeve in the upper basket area. NO ONE gets out, PERIOD! They know not even to ask. When we get to the store, they get a roll/bagel, they get cheese at the dairy counter and then when we get to the bulk area they get one piece of candy. It's been the same routine for so long they know it.

In the event the car carts are MIA, we do a regular cart. Maeve in the upper seat while Mo sits in the basket section.

I even wrote about it on my blog:

This is what I do! I could never imagine taking them both although there is a Shoprite by me that has a double seat (like the one at bjs) on the cart that they can sit in. I would rather just do it online though:)
