Crap. Crap crap crap. (Updated)

Cat broke off a tooth.  I think it was on Saturday morning.  He was walking through the kitchen and ran face-first into a chair leg (our chairs are metal).  He kinda bounced off and kept on keeping on, but we just found a broken-off canine tooth in the kitchen, right by the chair.

This is NOT something I planned on financially.  Crap crap crap crap.  Care Credit, here I come.  **sigh**

  • Oh my gosh poor kitty! Perhaps they can just do a simple extraction? That shouldn't cost too much. I hear of a lot of cats who can have all of their teeth pulled and still eat just fine, it seems like one wouldn't be a huge deal. Good luck! =(
  • I'm sorry to hear that. Poor Cat.

    Does he not see well?

No, he doesn't.  We're pretty sure he's near-blind in one eye and as he's aged, his other eye has really gotten worse too.  He mostly navigates by memory at this point.

The anesthesia for the extraction is actually scaring me (although I'm not usually that type) because of his age.  Gahhhh.  But we have an appointment at 2pm this afternoon with a vet I really trust, so here goes nothing.

Oh, poor little guy. Anesthesia is concerning to me, and all of our animals are relatively young. At least if it's a vet you know and trust, you can work together to find good options.

Elsie (our foster) has a broken tooth, and our vet said not to worry about it unless it starts to look infected.

  • Aw, poor little guy!  Teddie managed to break a tooth (on a Nylabone, we think).  He had to have it extracted because it started rotting soon after it happened.  When they were taking the tooth out, they found he had broken another one in the 2 weeks since we scheduled the appointment.  For 2 teeth extractions, it was around $400 (and he was under for a long time due to the deep rooted tooth).  We got an estimate before the actual extraction, and it was pretty much spot on - does your vet offer that?

She does.  We're looking at a minimum of $95 - exam and x-ray, plus $ for whatever meds she prescribes.  However, she can't estimate the extraction until she's seen the x-rays and knows what she's getting into.  So this afternoon - 2pm - I'll be able to say for sure if I need Care Credit or not.  But ugh - still not in the budget.

    How old is kitty?

We're not exactly sure.  I found him as a semi-feral stray in February 2003.  The vet at that time estimated that he was between 5 and 10 years old, based on tooth wear.  So that puts him at anywhere from 14 to 19 years old.  At the time, I selected 7 as an arbitrary number for his age.  Which means I consider him to be 16.

  • Update:

Took him to the vet.  He's on antibiotics for at least a week before they'll do the extraction.  Then he has to have blood work to determine that he's cool for anesthesia.  Then they'll do anesthesia.  We're looking at maximum $700, including today's visit.

Ugh.  I love my pets but I really hate paying vet bills.

On a semi-related note, though, the vet says he's ridiculously healthy looking for a 16-year-old cat.
