self cleaning litter box?

We are having issues with one or both of our cats peeing on the floor.  I'm pretty sure it is because DH is cleaning the box often enough.  We didn't have this problem when I was cleaning it, but now that I'm pg I can't.  They are only going on the floor right near the litter box (thankfully its a concrete floor in the basement)  I'm thinking of getting a self cleaning litter box in hopes this will eliminate the problem.  Any recommendations?

Re: self cleaning litter box?

  • We have a Littermaid one and love it.  Now, we have had to replace it in the past, but as long as it's within the warantee timeframe, they won't give you a hassle & send you a new one.  Just make sure that you purchase one that is for "multiple cats" because it will be larger.

The only pain about them is if you pour too much litter (past the red line where the censors are), the machine will get stuck and keep raking back & forth.  Another downfall is, sometimes litter particles will stick to the grooves of the rake, so you have to manually scoop them out, which kind of defeats the purpose of "self cleaning", ha.

But, all in all, I think they are a good investment.

  • Just keep in mind that some cats are freaked out by them and may not want to use it.  Maybe if you want to try it you should have one self cleaning and one regular so they have the option of using the other one until you have an idea of if they are OK with it. (and have your DH get on the ball with cleaning it better)

There is a link to the FAQs on top of the main Pets page in the green box - might want to check out the section on litter box issues.  It has a lot of great suggestions.  Also make sure you are cleaning up their pee with an enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's Miracle.  Regular cleaners won't really get the smell out (to the cat) and they will continue to go there.

  • We have a littermaid (the original, not the newer version) and I still scoop it almost daily.  It definitely helps keep it cleaner in the meantime, though.
