Pick yarn for me!

I would like to make this hat for the Craft Hope project (preferably in boy colors), but I am horrible at picking the right weight of yarn. I'm assuming since it's for cancer patients, it would need to be a super soft yarn, but past that I'm lost. I was planning on making an order from Knit Picks, so if you could tell me which yarn to pick from there, that would be great.

Also, do you think I can just go down a size or two of needles to make it smaller? Or do I have to decrease the amount of stitches? I am still at the stage where I like to follow a pattern to a T, or I get confused. lol

Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Pick yarn for me!

  • From what I can tell, it calls for Misti Tonos Chunky? I looked it up on ravelry, and it says it's a super bulky yarn. I'd start there. The pattern looks like it calls for alpaca, which is dreamy soft. Merino is good too.

You *can* go down a size or 2, but it's super bulky yarn, so it might cause problems. I'd run it by a pattern expert (you know, like Reinedumonde? ;) who can tell you how to make it smaller.

  • I can't access the pattern at work (stupid blocks!), but based on what Dr.L said, perhaps you could buy a slightly less bulky yarn, and then follow the pattern in a size or 2 smaller needle size?

(if you could link the pattern in ravelry, I can look at it there...)
