2 month vaccinations what to expect....

DD will have her 2 month vaccinations this coming Friday and I'm getting anxious about it for her. Do you ladies have any tips, techniques and suggestions to make this process easy and comfortable for her. TIA!

Re: 2 month vaccinations what to expect....

  • Tell them (don't ask) that you'll hold her in your lap while they do the shots.  It makes it less painful for baby than holding them down on the exam table.  Nurse right after for comfort.  Remember the tiny bit of pain she's feeling is better than the massive problems that come with those diseases.  Also don't give Tylenol before, it lessens the effectiveness of the vaccines.  When she wakes up after them her legs will be sore, but it passes really quick and she should be back to normal by the next day.

  • The actual shots go fast.  I don't think you need to do anything before.  The only tip I have is to make sure you take her in clothes that are easy to get back on over sore and mad legs.

DD never minded her shots too much as long as I picked her up as soon as they were over.  She usually only cried for a minute and didn't seem upset when we got home, just tired.

I hope your girl is just as easy.  Good luck.

  • Just hold her on her lap and distract her the best you can by talking to her, singing to her.  The first round will be harder on you than on her.    N definitely cried for his first but was easy to comfort and stopped very quickly.   I've found, as he's gotten older, that it's progressively gotten worse because he can anticipate them and fight them. At least, when they are little, they don't realize it's coming.

Good luck to both of you.

  • Know the proper Tylenol dosage for her and have it in hand just in case. DD slept for a few hours after her shots and woke up screaming. I didn't know how much to give her and of course the package says "under x months, consult a doctor". It was after hours when she needed the medicine so we had to wait for a call back while jahe was miserable. That's the only time she really reacted to shots so it may just have been a fluke

  • Don't be anxious.  It will only be bad for a minute or two. If you bf, nurse her right afterward and that will help.

Both my kids took huge naps after their shots, so I went out to enjoy a quiet meal while they napped in the car seat.

  • Ditto the clothing easy to get over the legs.  Also the tylenol dosage just in case.  I would also do a bath that night -- the sitting in warm water can help with muscle soreness at the injection site.  First thing in the morning, when her legs are super stiff, is likely when she will be a little unhappy and a warm compress on the injection site or another bath might help with the pain.  Doesn't last too long though.  GL!

  • I respect MrsGreeko and WonderRed stating to keep the child in your lap, most experienced nurses are comfortable with that, but not all of them are. When I was a newbie, I would have been really nervous about poking a parent or scratching a baby with the needle. Not every nurse is an expert, we have to learn just like everyone else.

Her Tylenol dose is 0.4ml if you have the infant concentrated drops. If you have the Children's Tylenol it is 1.25ml

  • My DD also fell asleep right after for a couple hours and woke up screaming and refused to nurse. After that for shots I tried to keep her awake for 15 minutes or so and bicycle her legs for a little bit so they wouldn't get so stiff and sore. I can't remember if it was the 2 month or 4 month that she slept in her carseat overnight because every time she would move her legs she would wake up screaming and the seat helped keep her legs still. It must have been her 2 month because it was also the first time she slept for 8 hours straight!
