moms if youve used a nebulizer on your baby, come in

turns out santino has bronchiolitis, the wheezing is down in his chest. He had to have a treatment at the pedi's office yesterday while me and a nurse held him down, and then anthony and i had to hold him down last night and this morning for more treatments. he thrashes and screams and makes himself gag. i hate when babies are sick, they dont get it, they cant complain like we can and shoot they cant even take nyquil lol!

they gave me the mask and the straw like attachment thing and told me to use the mask. my coworker said she used to have to do it on her son and she used the straw thing just to get the vapors around his face so that he would breathe in the medicine. her pedi told her that was fine, as long as he was breathing in the medicine.

if i could save him the trauma of the mask, because he seriously works himself into a crazy lunatic over it, i would do it. do you think he will get enough of the medicine with the straw as opposed to the mask?

any tips for me? i feel awful when he looks at me like 'mom, why are you trying to kill me?'

  • Our nebulizer has a nozzle type thing on it and we were told just to hold it close to his nose/mouth and that would be sufficient.  I hold him on my lap and put on Barney (the only show he'll sit for) and do my best.  Good luck!

  • Does he take a pacifier?  Our nebulizer came with a pacifier attachment (with a hold above it that shot the vapor right up into her nose).  It really helped us.  Otherwise using the straw/nozzle is just fine.  He will be breathing plenty of it in.  Put on a movie or a show that may keep him interested/sitting still.  Otherwise I would sit her on the floor and let her play with her toys and hold the nozzle up to her face.

  • We just held the nozzle close to their faces, put Elmo on or I sang right in their ear to distract them.  I didn't use the mask until they were older.

  • ok here's what we do/did step by step

get him on your lap, facing out. Put a tv show that he loves on.

Turn on the machine, and hold the mask by his stomach, so the vapors are going up but you're not putting anything over his face. When he settles down. Put your one arm over both of his arms, gently. Then move the mask up to his face. Don't strap it on him, just hold it as close to his face as you can without him freaking out. Strapping it on = way more fight than needed.  It'll get easier every time.

  • they didnt give us a pacifier thing, but he wouldnt take it anyway. fingers taste much better haha!!

i dropped him and his nebulizer off at my moms this morning with the mask, and i didnt bring the nozzle attachment. but this will save my mom the drama of him throwing a fit if i could just hold it near his face instead of having to literally strap him down.

    thanks ladies!

  • Most kids do not like the treatment.  i blame the really loud machine.  I used to put it on the floor with a pillow over it.  WE always used the mask.  They never would use the mouthpiece.  After a couple treatments they were much better and more at ease.  He will get more of the medicine with the mask.

    Hope he's feeling better!!!

  • i didn't use the mask i used the the mouth piece or i just put it in front of her face so she breathed it in.  I always tried to make a game out of it somehow. her nebulizer looked like a schiool bus so she would either sit on it and pretend or sing the wheels on the bus. the sucker was loud so that kind of sucked she would get bored quick but i did what i could do. keep trying

  • You can ask your pedi to use a inhaler instead of the nebulizer. It comes with a spacer tube and is 100% easier and faster than the nebulizer. My kids actually like it most of the time. Not sure if there is any reason why they perscribe nebulizers instead of inhalers.  We had the nebulizer and had the same problem as you with it.

We also try to distract with silly faces and songs and toys with the inhaler but once they got used to it we no longer have to do that.

This is what I did. I would cuddle her and we would watch TV, read a book or play...anything to distract her. Poor baby! Hope he gets better soon!

  • Lucas was pretty good wth the mask - he'd end up falling asleep... but I also used the tube thing and it was fine - I'd do it when he was getting a bottle (AKA he was STILL) and just put it right by his nose to make sure he was breathing it in - it was fine.

I don't know if they warned you but as everything breaks up he's going to cough a lot more and seem worse before he seems better - it's normal.

Good luck - we just went through the bronchiolitis thing with Lucas last month. My mom's friend is a ped nurse @ Hackensack ER and siad like every kid in north Jersey has been in for it.

  • It's hell.  My son FREAKS out with even the nozzle thing (not the mask).  My husband is gone in the very early in the am, so I"m on my own with the thing, which is that much worse.  I put him in his high chair and just spray the nozzle toward him, which means moving back and forth constantly b/c he keeps thrashing his head around to avoid it.  It's a blast.  Sorry--I know it's really tough and I keep hoping they'll find a better way!
