Rehoming help for a smart kitty

***puts on flame retardant suit***

Before I start I'd like to say that if there was ANYWAY I could keep Tundra I would, however except not enlisting in the Army I've exhausted every option that I know.

I've enlisted in the Army, I'll be stuck living in the barracks as a low-rank unmarried enlisted soldier. Which means absolutely no pets. Crying

Now on to my question, or need for help. I've contacted the rescue I adopted her from, posted on FB and my local Nest board. What other options do I have for finding her a GOOD home. I'm scared of CL because of the horror stories I've heard. Anyone have suggestions on how to make sure she's getting a good home?

Also here's some info and photos, I'm in Tampa but I'd be willing to drive a good distance if anyone here was able to help find her a good home.

Any help is greatly appreciated!  Thank you!

Tundra is smart. She knows, "sit", "up", and "turn around". She's loving & friendly, abet a little shy at first. She loves to play with the laser pointer and gets along with other kitties. She hasn't been around other dogs but I'm fairly certain she would adapt to them well. She's a fatty and very food motivated. She can be very vocal (typical Siamese) however she only really "talks" when you're in the kitchen (Meow, gimme some scraps, meow). She's the perfect angel regarding the litter box, never had an accident or had issues with it at all! Basically she's a perfect lady.

She's fixed, microchipped, & up to date on shots. She's about 1 1/2 and 11 lbs of pure love.

***ETA: Her doing her tricks for treats ;)

Re: Rehoming help for a smart kitty

  • Aww. She's so beautiful. I'm sorry that you need to rehome her. Do you not have any friends or family who would be willing to take her temporarily while you're gone? What about a foster situation? DH's brother works as a white-water rafting guide during the summer and lives on a campsite where he can't have his dog, so he has a foster family who watches him during those few months out of the year. I know that a former coworker worked out a similar arrangement before he left for Spain for grad school. He will get his kitties back when he returns to the states.

Out side of shelters, rescues, etc. Is there a family member or friend who might be willing to care for her until you are able to have her with you again? Just a temporary solution - so she can come back and live with you when you can have a pet-friendly environment?

Looks like great minds think alike - we both posted the same thing at around the same time :p

    Indeed! :)

  • Unfortunately no I don't have any friends or family that can take her. :(

Also it'll be close to 3-4 years before I can have pets again :( Unless I get married  and I don't plan on doing that anytime before 3-4 years!

  • Have you contacted St. Francis Animal Society?  They are a network of fosters that might be able to help.  Sometimes the Humane Society will take owner surrenders if they have space and they are no-kill.

Thats actually where I adopted her from, I'm waiting to hear back! I'll check with the Humane Society as well. Thank you!

  • Typically rescues will take back the pets they adopt out.  I don't know about yours, but when I adopted all of my rescues, I had to sign a contract which stated that in the event I cannot keep the pet, I MUST return him/her to the rescue.  Do you still have a copy of your paperwork?

EDIT: Wait it out if you can.  Owner surrenders don't have a "grace period" like found animals...

  • I would contact Siamese rescues in FL and see if they would be willing to courtesy post her for you; if you have a local cat rescue who does adoption events at petco or Petsmart they may let you bring her to the events so she can meet people.  I do have an application and contract I use when DH and I foster without rescue backing, and I would be happy to send them to you if you PM me your email.  We do use craigslist but make everyone do the application, contract and $50 adoption fee.  On your case, you should have the adoption fee be a $50 donation to her rescue or a local shelter (so you don't financially profit from rehoming).  We normally charge it to recoup some of the medical costs.

  • Since I'm local, if you'd like, I can make a poster for my work and MH's work (with her pic and info) asking people to contact me if interested and I can pass them along to you... or you can PM me your email address and I'll put that on the flyer instead.  Let me know!  I'll also post on my FB for the locals.

MH denied my request to take her home into our zoo... :(

  • Try contacting http://www.siameserescue.org/ They have a network of fosters and people that transport cats to new homes.
  • If I was near you I would take her right now. ((I'm in Kansas) as long as shed love my kids, my boy Kitty, and the litter box.

  • Since I live in Florida, I shared this on facebook. (I hope that's okay - let me know if you want me to take it down.) At a different point in our lives, we might have been able to take her ourselves, but with the baby on the way, we just can't take on any more animals right now. I hope you find a good home for her! She's beautiful. She looks a lot like a foster we used to have.
