my vent for the day

why do people bring in smelly fish for lunch? maybe im the odd man out, but i hate the smell of fish. i dont care if i have to smell red meat or whatever, thats not as offensive as fish. this fish smell is just over powering the whole office now.

my old job had a rule that no fish was allowed to be brought in because of people's allergies. i wish we had the same rule here!

Re: my vent for the day

  • Is there a cafeteria in your office? I think a better rule is to only allow food to be heated & eaten in a specific area.

theres a kitchen where people can heat up their food and sit and eat and stuff, but a lot of people bring their lunch back to their desk to work through lunch. theres no like rules or anything against that, and i dont want to rock the boat by suggesting that they can only eat in the kitchen.

but ughhhh the fish is just nasty smelling..

  • Oh you are so not alone in this!!!  I loathe seafood!! Loathe it!!! It smells bad to me when it is originally cooked.  When it's reheated it makes me want to puke. Ick!  When I was PG I actually did puke from the smell.  Not PG now but I came close to puking last week it was that horrible here.

My boss will heat it up and come down and eat at her desk in her office but the smell travels so by then it's all downstairs and smelling gross and the smell lingers around.  I am sure the seafood lovers will flame but I think it's disgusting and rude to microwave fish in the office.  No matter where you are or if you seclude yourself, once it's reheated it reeks the entire place.

Seriously. Everyone has aversions. Or allergies for that matter. But we're all grown ups & that's life. I get that you hate the smell. I hate the smell of curry but I would never dream of complaining or saying that they could only eat it in a certain space. I just spray some perfume and hide at my desk till it goes away.

  • seriously banning a food like that in an adult setting is something else.
  • i think banning is a bit over the top, but at the same time, people should be cognizant of the odors that they are creating and the impact that they have on their co-workers...
  • I can't stand that smell.  Even when I used to eat fish still couldn't stand the smell of reheated seafood.  Blech.

This, the "rule" at my job is if you are to keep your office door closed or eat in the kitchen if you are eating a hot meal.
