Feeding dogs pineapple

We're having troubles with our rescue eating her own poop.  We try so hard to clean it all up regularly, but she always manages to find something that's gotten hidden in the snow.  It's disgusting, and even more disgusting that she comes in the house afterwards and gives "kisses" to my DD.  Barf.

I read in the post below that people feed their dogs pineapple or pineapple juice to deter them from eating their own poop.  How exactly does that work?  How often do you feed it to them?  TIA!

Re: Feeding dogs pineapple

  • I think you just put it in with their regular food? I wouldn't personally feed any fruit that's in syrup, I would either get a fresh pineapple and cut it myself, or get it from the produce section. Our grocery store sells already cut up pineapple packaged in natural pineapple juice without the added sugar.

I've never had to use it with my pups. They only like cat poop. :)

  • We fed one of our rescues who did this pineapple from the store.....didn't think about the sugar....my H bought it, so I don't know exactly what kind it was.

It worked, but only for a little while. Then we went to supplements from the vet. Those worked, too, but only for a little while. Then, nothing worked but cleaning it up, pretty much as it fell on the ground.

Well that sucks.  Eh.. worth a shot anyways.  I usually buy the canned packed in water so I'll try that.

  • The poop eating it the absolute worst. I fed them either fresh pineapple or canned in water (never syrup) with every meal. I would give them a few chunks at a time. It maybe deterred them for a minute, then they went right back for it. Even the supplements the vet has, they told me that it only works as long as you are constantly giving it, and it's a little $$. I've been working SO HARD on "leave it" with their poop, as well as my neighbor's dogs poop (who, for being 10 lbs, goes poop 57 times a day). If I can get a good "leave it" in before they get to it, they will leave it. But it's still a race to pick it up.
