The price of fun..

So I got my taxes done yesterday, (the plus side of working in a tax office), and I told my boss that if DH was nice to me, I would think about spending part of our refund on baseball tickets (went spent $$$ last year and went to about 20 Giants games, we do one big thing a year, concerts, travel, sporting events). She said that we seem to do a good job of enjoying ourselves and our lives. I agree, we try really hard to do stuff. We don't have debt, we don't have kids, our only responsibilities are to our jobs and our kitties and each other. We really don't splurge on things like clothes or eating out and stuff like that... we prefer to go out and do stuff.

What do you consider worth spending money on? What kinds of things would you splurge on?

Re: The price of fun..

  • I like to splurge on activities, but I get bogged down at the costs of things related to that, like the price of gas or hotels. I absolutely hate to spend money on a hotel.I live up in Chico, which isn't really full of fun day trips, so as much as I would love to go spend the day doing something fun in the Bay, we'd have to drive 3 hours and then pay for a hotel. So it doesn't happen.

Actually, we don't splurge much. We're tightwads, lol. We do spend a lot on special gluten-free foods and ingredients, but that's about it. Oh, we go to the movies a few times a year, I guess.

  • Well, if I'm totally honest, I like to splurge on everything.== insert  Blushy face==  if I'm going to buy something I want it to last and be good quality.

It's something I'm working to get over and prioritize what's most important and I'd never splurge and go into debt over something like a pair of shoes, and we still save every month, but I love clothes, shoes, eating out, and could probably cut back in these areas.

I'll spend more on good quality groceries to make sure I know where our food is coming from etc. the other is definitely experiences, shows, travel, classes I'll spend a lot on those type of things as well.

  • we are pretty thrifty and homebodies for the most part but i would say that our biggest splurge would be on home improvement projects. last year we got bamboo flooring for our downstairs which dh installed.

im sure now thar our little lily is here we will make more splurges toward vacations with her.

  • Mrs. Samantha - First, I want to say that your cats remind me of mine. We have an orange and brown tabby :)

Second - my husband and I splurge every once in a while but now with a little one on the way our splurges will be far and few in between. Right now, any extra money we have to splurge on will go towards the baby or home stuff. Although, I'm hoping to pay my auto loan off soon with the help of a tax refund (which I'll do taxes this weekend).

I'm the same way, except I'm not trying to get over it  :P  I'd rather wait or get less things overall, but when I finally spend the money on something, I want it to be something of good quality that will last, and that was produced in a way that's environmentally and morally acceptable to me. That often means spending more money, and I'm ok with that.

I guess my splurges are: Eating out at nice restaurants and/or buying fancy food to make at home. Occasionally clothes and shoes.

For DH, it's anything camera related, trips with his buddies to go look for snakes/lizards/frogs to photograph, or once in a while outdoor gear of some sort.

  • We're not splurgers either. More like frugal to a fault. But, we do eat out a lot. It's our way of socializing with friends and we like to enjoy food and wine when we do.

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

Well, maybe not trying to get over it, but control my urge to go

    Overboard rather.  :p

I will also spend money on services rather than " stuff"

  • LOL, every time we do this I always feel like a tightwad. I've never done manicures/pedicures, massages, spa days or had a hair stylist. We never go to the movies and rarely out to dinner. We rarely have alcohol in the house not because we're teetotalers but because we can't afford to have it. But then I have always been broke and my parents didn't splurge on things except travel and food. I guess I could say that when I do have money to splurge on things (which we don't esp now) I would say travel and food. I guess I'm a chip off the old block. I do always have tea in the house for me and coffee for DH. When I'm working, I do go to cafes for coffee or tea.
