Anyone's child wear glasses?

If so, was it a hard transition? L needs glasses and I just want to know what I'm in for......

Re: Anyone's child wear glasses?

  • mine does. and i have worn them since i was 3

belle is seriously blind as a bat. i had NO idea (well i had assumptions but i didn't realize HOW bad she was till we went to the eye dr) parent of the year here

for belle. it was easy peasy. i was AMAZED it how easy it was. she's 4. and we made a big deal about going to the glasses store and picking out glasses. and seriously the girl started wearing them and never turned back. part of it is she realizes how BADLY she sees without them. and gets upset (they have broken twice-i URGE you to buy two pairs one as back up) and that was hard on her while they where getting fixed.

but she doesn't leave them places. she leaves them on and won't play with them (for the most part) sometimes she does and i remind her to be careful or they will break.

The only thing is she'll fall asleep with them on a lot so I have to take them off her at night. But I always check on her so thats no big deal

    Good luck

  • i on the other hand left them EVERYWHERE my mom told me :)
  • Corey started wearing them when he was like 6 or 7.  So he was a little older.  And he doesn't need them all the time.  He needs them for reading, computer, TV, etc.  Even at 10 he still sometimes forgets them in school or forgets them at home.  He doesn't mind wearing them though.

  • Thanks. L is severely farsighted (much worse than I am) with astigmatism in both eyes as well. DH wore glasses from age 5, but I've only been wearing glasses (contacts) for 12 years.

I only got one pair since he's farsighted because he doesn't need to read yet and if he loses them, we can wait a week and it won't be bad and he'll muddle through! LOL! At least right now.

Thanks! I was just a bit concerned since all the other kids I know with glasses started at age 4 and he's only 3 right now........

  • We have friends who's oldest is the same age as DS.  At a little over 2, the doctor prescribed him glasses, I think for a lazy eye.  He never wears them.  He hates them and they haven't really enforced wearing them.  He's tried them on for us, but that was about it. But he was younger than your son and I'm not sure if he sees a difference with the glasses on or not.

    Good luck!

  • My best friend's son has glaucoma and has been wearing them since he was a baby.  She initially got him that strap for the back of his head until he got used to them.  She now has no isses.  She got him these really fun Blue ones so he's really into them.
  • Alastair started wearing them at age 3, and he also wore a patch for a whole year. Neither one was a big deal, honestly - I was way more stressed about it than he was! At 3 they're just so flexible, you know? Now he is newly (as of about 6 months ago, at age 4.5) wearing bifocals, the kind with the visible line, and that wasn't a big deal either.

My biggest complaint with him that first year was him taking off the glasses (in the car, or sometimes when he was watching TV), and chewing on the arms. Ugh. We were back at Pearle about a hundred times getting them adjusted too, when they woudl start to slip down. We got those flexible frames, where you could twist them all up and they wouldn't break, and we also bought the extra warranty (or whatever they call it) for them in case of breakage.

good luck, I hope it goes smoothly.

  • We were recently told one of our boys has to wear glasses, he will be 2 in March. We ordered him Miraflex (rubber glasses) so he won't get hurt if he falls. His eye turns in. So far he screams and cries at the eyeglass store when we tried to put them on. Hopefully he will get used to the idea. I bought him books about eyeglasses and try to wear mine more around him. I think it will take a while before he will wear them. We shall see.

  • Yes Dylon got his glasses In October and what a difference it made in his Life. I had no clue he couldn't see until his 4 year check up. I brought up to the Doctor's attention some concern and after that he was immediately checked. The kid now watches TV like he never did before. He never sat longer then 10 minutes, Now he can actually enjoy watching a movie. He got used to it as soon as it was placed on his face.
Although it was harder on the school kids, whom made fun of him which it all got nipped on the butt as soon as it happened.

  • I have worn glasses since I was 6 minths old. I had an eye that crossed really bad. I always asked my M how did you keep them on me as a kid? And she always said you knew you could not see well without them and you never took them off.  I hope it goes well. Good Luck.

  • When Nicky was 3 we were told that he needed them but the eye Dr. didn't stress on getting them right away.  He said we could wait.  I 'knew' he wouldn't wear them so we waited until he was 4.  I thought that would have been a hassle, but as soon as he put them on he didn't take them off.  I agree with the pp, you should get a 2nd pair.  They came in handy the 2nd week of school.  I also bought the transitional lenses which are great!
