Anyone familiar with Basking Ridge?

We are considering looking for homes there. Does anyone have any info on the town? Where are the best areas to live in? What elementary schools are the best?

Thansk!

Re: Anyone familiar with Basking Ridge?

  • i live in warren the next town over, but have many friends in BR, i generallthe whole town is nice, and i believe all of the grammer schools are great. there is also a catholic school in town if you wanted a catholic school. when we were looking for a house the one area i didnt care for is a section called the hills. it is a "newer" area of town lots of homes, some are right ontop of each other, and others are spaced out better but it is massive community of homes, they have there own grammer school because there were so many homes built in that section.
  • I live in Bernardsville - the next town over. Basking Ridge (AKA Bernards Township) is nice and HUGE. Housing there runs the gamut in terms of affordability (we lived in a 2 BR TH ?  Countryside ? just off Mount Airy near the YMCA). The Y is terrific and they are thinking adding on to it.  Within the township there are lots of good restaurants ,  private schools and preschools as well as golf, horseback, and it is, in general, family friendly. There is a VERY small downtown area but overall there is no center to the town. There are various areas ? Liberty Corner, The Hills (which runs over into Bedminster) and Basking Ridge proper. The areas can get a bit snooty about one another. The schools are very highly rated but, to my mind, a bit big (especially on the HS level). Had we stayed in town our son would have gone to Oak Street Elementary and I have heard no complaints about Oak Street. The superintendant of schools and the assistant are retiring as of the end of this year. Taxes are high. The Catholic Church is town is one of the wealthiest in the diocese. I liked living there but we moved to Bernardsville for lower taxes and smaller schools. If you want specific information, ask.

  • There are no bad parts of Basking Ridge. It's a wonderful town, easy to highways, great schools, nice people, lots of local restaurants.

  • I second what atwood said.  Basking Ridge is a great town- there really are no bad parts.  Very good schools, a lot of nice restaurants (including my absolute favorite, 3 West), kid friendly.  We're one town over in Warren, and we're constantly doing things in Basking Ridge.

  • My SIL lives in Basking Ridge.  Super nice town.  They have a house on an old farm off of Childs Road.  Easy to get to 287 for work.  My niece and nephew both are in grade school up there.  Tons of activities.  Niece horseback rides competively.  Nephew is in football and baseball.  SIL works for the school and has never said a bad word about her job or the kids.

Home prices are on the higher side and taxes can be high as well. It all depends on what you're looking for.

My friend just moved to Bridgewater but on the border of Bernardsville.  Beautiful house and she's very happy with the school system too.

  • I live in Basking Ridge in the Hills (more toward the Bedminster side) and love it.  The Hills is a great area with 3 close shopping centers, easy access to 287 and 78 and have varied types of housing (condos, single family moderate homes, single family huge homes, neighborhoods with older people but not age restricted, neighborhoods with HOAs, etc).

The down side is that BR taxes are insane!  Bernardsville or Bedminster (right near by) are cheaper I think.  In The Hills, the houses on the BR side are taxed something like almost 2x what the houses on the Bedminster side are.

There are no bad parts of the BR, Bernardsville and Bedminster areas.

  • My friend has been looking for a home there for months. His issues have been finding one not near the tracks or highways. There have been very few listings in the last 6 months.

There are very few places you can go in Town that do not deal with 287 or the railroad.
