Do you think this name will have nicknames?
This baby is still without a name...a new name we've thrown out there for a girl is Finley. DH insists people will call her either Fin or Leigh. I disagree because Fin is a boy name, and Leigh is a legit name in itself and I don't think people will just call someone named Finley another name like Leigh, even though it is a part of the name. Also, i am aware that people don't have to have nicknames and I can discourage people from calling her a nickname...but it's an issue.
Re: Do you think this name will have nicknames?
Yep. I'd absolutely called her Fin of Finny.
This is why my sons name is Wyatt. Best you can do is Wy as a nickname and that just sounds dumb, lol. I hate nicknames. HATE THEM.
most likely as she gets older, her friends will shorten it. When she's younger, like you said, you can correct people but it will be up to her as she gets older.
I'm not a fan of nicknames myself. It was one of the BIG reasons why we chose Calebs name, there really is no nickname for it. As for Brielle I am ok if her friends call her "Brie" when she gets older. Until then she's "Brielle"
They'll call her Fin.... not Leigh, but Fin I can see.
You can only discourage so much, I think - eventually she's going to grow up and be called by what SHE prefers.
Alexis I thought would be Lexi - and she is sometimes, but they also call her "D" at school b/c that's what our last name starts with and she's 1 of 2 Alexises in the class. She answers to Lexi, D, boogie, Alexis and a host of other things - but knows what her name is... it's not a big deal to me.
In the day and age of everything being quicker and shorter, yes I think she'd be call either Fin or Leigh. I personally wouldn't have problem with either : )
I know a 1 yr old Finley - I don't think she has a nickname, I think she is just Finley, though I could see Finny being a cute affectionate nickname for people close to her
I can make a nickname out of any name, and as a teacher I have, lol.
As a child, you can control what people call her, and as she gets older she can control what people call her.
As Debfife has said, her four year old daughter has corrected people who have tried to call her a nickname.

D&E @ 22w 9.30.09 CMV infection BFP 10.15.10 C/P 4w4d
if you teach her she is Finley - as she grows she'll just correct people... no biggie. And if she likes a NN someone gives her -then it's her choice.
I wouldn't worry. I love the name. We considered it for Griffin... but DH thought it was too close to Finbar, who he has a few in his family and didn't want to use first names after someone.
I named my youngest cat Finley. I usually call him Finny or Fin, but of course, he's just a cat and most people usually get playful with their pets' names.
I agree that as a parent you can control what people call your child to a large degree, but after a certain age she's on her own and may decide differently than you.
I wanted a name that had no nickname so I picked Ethan thinking no one would call him "Eeeth". But being on the nest & FB all the time my shorthand was always typing E. So by doing that, people actually refer to him as E.
But that's my own fault. If you don't like nicknames don't pick a name that is bound to be or really easily shortened. Otherwise just be prepared for it.
With a name like Genevieve, I grew up with one and seeing it spelled out doesn't automatically make me think "Jenny" the way it would with Jennifer. I would never call the girl I grew up with Jenny- it was just always Genevieve so I think sometimes spelling matters.
I a nutshell. Yes. It will have nicknames.
But, if you don't want to use them, don't. As the others mentioned, if you correct people when she is born (It's Finley) then she will likely do the same.
I think all names have nicknames no matter what. My husband is Ed but people still call him Eddy (never Edwin which is his full name). My parents said they had no clue people would call me Gabby or Gabbs when they named me Gabrielle but surprise they do (and the other name choices for me were either Diana or Nadine....Bleeccchh!)
Stephanie gets called Stephy or Steph. When she was younger she'd get called Stephy Pooh by the daycare teachers.
Evan...we figured no one would give him a nickname but nope....the girls in the infant room used to call him Ev, Evy and Evy Pooh! Really? Evy Pooh?
So yeah....people will make nicknames out of anything!

People can make nicknames out of anything. people call me Jo, Jod, Jodster, Jodiode! I call my nephew JP, Jipper, Jipster, Jippididooda. My Eliza is called Liza a lot, but never Eli or Ellie, which was the nickname that we were thinking of for her.
I love Finley!
I think Finley is a nice name, Finny is sweet nickname for a little girl and Fin just sounds cool for a teenager.
