Kitty Is Pooping On His Own Tail

Our newest cat, Triz, has been having issues lately in the litterbox. When he uses the litterbox, he somehow manages to get poop all over his tail. We have watched his behaviors, and usually he wraps his tail off to the side, but he must be sometimes wrapping it under himself. He also has an on and off problem with diarrhea. We've taken him to the vet several times to be checked out, and the vet says that he doesn't have any illness-type issues. Usually she sends us home with vitamin packets to mix with his food. This seems to help, but a few weeks later the problem resurfaces. I've encouraged my boyfriend to switch to dry food only, since I think the problem is exacerbated by the wet food he likes to treat them to. Anyone have similar stories or suggestions?

Re: Kitty Is Pooping On His Own Tail

  • What are you feeding him?  Constant diarrhea is not a good thing.
  • I don't think it's the wet vs. dry, it may be the brand and/or ingredients. Ditto Katie, what do you feed?

  • We have a cat with poop-aiming troubles and we take him to the groomer for a "sanitary shave" - they take all the hair off his butt and the back of his legs and tail.  He looks ridiculous, but he's not smearing poo everywhere.

I also agree with the PPs that he may be reacting poorly to the ingredients in his food.  Dry food (IMHO) is the most common culprit for ingredients that can cause illness.  What are you feeding and have you tried switching?
