Anyone totally cancel cable and use a streaming product?

Has anyone cancelled their cable/satelite/etc and use only a streaming product?

I have heard of Apple TV and Boxee, both can be connected to a netflix account.  Boxee automatically connects to the internet and does auto loads of popular shows.

Anyone do this, what did you use instead?  Did you also cancel your internet and use something else?  We really need to cut our cable bill by A LOT

Re: Anyone totally cancel cable and use a streaming product?

  • no, but have you called Comcast and asked them for a promotion? We always get out bill lowered by a lot, sometimes we even end up with extra channels and a lower bill.
  • Yup! We did 5 years ago and haven't missed it. We use Netflix and Hulu. If you watch a lot of sports though (which we don't), it's hard to do without it. We aren't big TV watchers though.

We are planning on moving out of state soon, so we don't want to sign another contract - our current contract is up next month.

  • you are!?!! towards your fam?

We never had to sign another contract, they just gave us a new rate that's valid for a certain time, but not binding.

MH is a sports watcher, some of these "boxes" allow live stream of sports.  Doesn't bother me in the slightest - maybe he will always watch them at the neighbors lol

    No, to PA

  • we were about to do this last week.  we didn't but our reason may not matter to you.  it was important to us to have basic channels - 2, 4, 5, 7 etc.  husband went out and purchased an antennae and the converter thing but we were unable to receive the signal for any channels so we went back to cable.  i'll also tell you that we did do the Netflix streaming and it sucks.  the selection of movies is terrible.  the newest movie is years old.  i'm disappointed but hope that in a short time there will be more options.

we were going to keep comcast for internet.  it would have reduced our bill from $160 to $75/month if we went through with our plan + the $8/month for Netflix.

Oh, we do have local channels through cable - costs us $10/month (also have high-speed internet too) so we DO have TV.

As for the Netflix streaming, yes, it is limited, but they have improved it over the years (there used to be nothing). We watch a lot of documentaries and series that we never caught on cable.

My husband now works in Allentown - so we are looking at areas in the Nazareth, Parkland, East Penn, or Southern Lehigh School Districts.  We are not too familar with any of the areas in those districts - so I am sure we in for lots of looking.

I know you are in Bucks County (well, according to the info on the left lol) - how far would that be from Allentown?
