Cat related - TMI- update

I think our cat is dying.

He was sick last night then this morning there was blood in it.  A lot.

I took him into the vet this morning, just got a call that he's lost a lot of weight (I asked dh this a month or so ago and he blew me off saying that the cat needed to lose weight), there is blood in his urine and he's growly when the vet pushed on his tummy.  We haven't given or changed anything in his diet and he doesn't really eat anything except cat food and tries to eat the dog food.  He's very seditary and most of the time wants to be left alone unless he's hungry.

They are going to run some x-rays, but from the above it doesn't sound good, does it?

Update- The vet found a soft tissue mass in his abdomen, his liver is smaller than normal and his intestines are squished.  They are running blood work now to see if that can tell us anything more.  Dh and I are going to discuss out options.  This sucks.

Re: Cat related - TMI- update

  • Don't freak out yet.  Cats are excellent at hiding their symptoms for a long, long time.  You usually don't know a cat is sick until they're REALLY sick, so don't blame yourself.  That said, those symptoms can point to a lot of different things, many of them quite treatable.  Out of curiosity, are we talking bloody puke or bloody poop?

I hope for good news for your kitty!

  • I was hoping you would respond J.  It was bloody vomit.  His bowels have been okay other than this past weekend when cleaning I noticed a few more dribbles on his litter mat than normal.  Dh blew that off too.  I should have followed my instincts and called Monday.
  • Don't blame yourself!  Cats are REALLY good at hiding things.  It's hard to "know" what could be a symptom and what's just "normal".  I hope it turns out better than expected!

  • Oh no!  :(

One of my kitties was very, very sick about two years ago.  She was acting very lethargic, and when I put her in my lap, I noticed she was severely dehydated.  I took her to the e-vet (it was a Sunday night) for some fluids, then took her to my normal vet the next morning.

She was on an IV for almost two weeks.  They ended up opening her up as a last resort, because they couldn't find anything on the x-rays.  They removed her gallbladder (thinking that was the cause), and she was back to her old self within days.

They still have no idea what happened to her, or what her problem was.  But, she's been fine ever since.  Hopefully your kitty is going through the same kind of thing - I'll keep my fingers crossed that they find something that can help her feel better.  :(

  • Did they find out anything more?  I hope it's nothing serious :(

Both of my cats have had major issues in the past few years, and with both I wasn't aware until it was almost too late.  With kids and cats being so quiet, we just don't notice.  It's sad, but there's not much to go on.
