WWYD? MM type question

I got an unexpected refund from school. We really need a new mattress. The one we have is 12 years old. We flip it and turn it often, but it doesn't matter. There are holes where we sleep. Sleep is not good for either of us. My neck hurts all the time. We both toss and turn all the time. However, we have credit card debt we could put it towards. It's enough that we could probably spend half on a mattress and put the other half toward a credit card. Or if we put the whole check towards one of the cards, we could pay all but about $500 off of it. WWYD?

Re: WWYD? MM type question

  • If your mattress is that bad, I think I would get a new one and then put the rest of the money toward the cc debt.  It is important to sleep well (and without pain), so I would consider that important.  If it was just that you wanted a new mattress, or larger, or something else that wasn't necessary, I would say put all the money toward the cc.
  • I would go to Costco/Target/BBB/Walmart and go buy a nice foam memory-type topper thing for my current mattress then pay all toward the CC.  A good night's sleep is VERY important but I'm going to try to be the Suze Orman voice in your head right now.  :-)
  • If you paid off the cc, would not making that payment give you extra money to save for a mattress in a reasonable amount of time?  If so, I'd probably do that.  If not, I'd get a good deal on a mattress and put the rest toward credit card debt.

Ditto this. Those toppers pretty much turn any mattress into a new comfortable bed

  • If the mattress is really that bad I would probably look at buying a new mattress.  Having a good nights rest is really important for me.  I would suggest going to denver mattress.  We bought a "clearance" mattress for a really great deal.  It was their top of the line model and we bought it for the same price as their cheapest.  The store on Colorado Boulvard has the clearance area (not sure about other stores).  If you can find a good mattress for a good deal it may be worth it.  Otherwise maybe try the memory foam until  you can save up for a good one (good ones that will last for years are very expensive).
  • I like pp ideas about buying a memory foam topper. If that's not enough, then maybe go get the mattress. best thing we've ever done was buy a basic mattress at Denver mattress ($600 for a king) and then bought the memory foam topper at costco ($130). That way, if the foam ever did get compressed, we can flip the foam. Before, we had a built-in pillow top and once it got compressed, you couldn't flip the mattress. I love what we have now, but maybe the topper will be enough for you...

  • I'd pay down the credit card.  Here's my thinking.  You can't cheap out on a mattress.  So pay the credit card spend a couple of months paying it off and then save that payment for a mattress, this way you don't have to cheap out on a mattress only to have to buy a new one again in a couple of years.
