Another WWYD? Living in a second floor apt

We live in a second floor apt. We specifically asked for a top floor apt so we wouldn't have to deal with noise from above because the last couple of apts we have lived in have been terrible so I try to be courteous of the people below us because I know how miserable it can be, but I need to work out. I need to do more than yoga and pilates, but I worry about disturbing the people below us with all of the movement. FTR, the people below us blast their music/movies/games/whatever so loud that everything vibrates in the evening and often times through the night. It's not uncommon for us to get up to go to work at 4:45 and hear it. Do I do what I want regardless of the noise or do I find somewhere else to work out even though its a PITA?

  • If it's during normal hours, I'd go ahead and do it.  If they complain, you can sweetly mention their loudness and do some negotiating!

  • I used to work out doing wii fit step at like 5 am, and I didn't think too much of it.. it is in the living room, not above a bedroom, and we have a thick rug...

I say do it and see what happens.

  • I am in the same situation.  I am not going to be able to go back to my bootcamp class after my LO arrives due to my DH's work schedule.  I plan on doing P90X or Insanity at home.  We live on the top floor of our condo complex so I've been worried about it.  Everyone keeps telling me that I still need to live my life and can't not workout because of my neighbor.  Luckily, she is very hard of hearing and is up at 5am and out of the house all day.

I say do what you need to do.  If it is during normal house and not "quiet hours" there shouldn't be a problem.

  • Part of living in an apartment is sharing walls and floors with other people...  I put up with my neighbor's dog barking and she puts up with Emmaline's occasional crying.  We tolerate the upstairs neighbors playing fetch with their dog at 11pm and they put up with us being awake, making noisy breakfasts at 6am.

I say, do what you need to do!  Don't worry about them!!

  • I'd say don't do anything that's floor-shakingly loud before 7am or after 9pm, but other than that I wouldn't worry about it.  DH does Insanity and P90X workouts, and we're in a duplex so nobody under us, but someone next to us, and I'm pretty sure they think we have a herd of elephants living in our house, but they've never said anything.

  • From someone who was esestially chased out of her last apartment by her downstairs neighbor because my 4 year old boy behaved like a 4 year old boy, when you live in an apartment, you will hear noise.  It becomes a fact of life.  The people in the upstairs units should not have to tiptoe through their lives.  Keep it between the hours of 8 am - 9 pm and don't do anything unusual, but you have the right to live too.  Besides, yoga and Pilates don't require jumping so you should be good, regardless.
