WWND?

So we have to move DS2 from daycare because he has had some stomach issues that have caused a bit of a set back in potty training.  This is going to be a temporary move because as soon as we get this under control he will go back.  Probably by June 1.

So here are our choices:

Preschool 1 is very close to the house.  This means DH would help with the pick up and drop off.  They said we could either put him in the 2 to 3 yr old room or the 3 to 4 yr old room.  He is 3 in April.  If we put him in the 3 to 4 yr old room and we find it is not a good fit they will move him.  My concerns with the 2-3 yr old room.  It is a very, very young room.  He is pretty advanced for his age.  Also, the playground area for this age group is really a joke.  It is a plastic play house and it is on astroturf.  My concern with the 3-4 yr old room is his maturity.  If it does not work he will be in the other room and yet another transition.

Preschool 2 is very similar to where he is now.  I have experience with this preschool as DD went there.  Location not as convenient, but not terribly out of the way either.

So what do you think?  Is the playground as big of a deal as I think it is?  Since we know it is temporarily should I let convenience be my deciding factor?

Re: WWND?

  • My non-mom thoughts:

Do you think he'll adapt better to the older kids or younger kids?  Is he the type to want to do things because the "big kids" are doing it?  Or is he the type that will want to "teach" the younger kids how to do things?  My (limited) experience with that age is that they want to do what the "big kids" are doing more than they want to boss around the "little kids"

It sounds like you'd rather do preschool 1, but just aren't sure where to place him.

  • I think the playground is a big deal. I know DS is much happier when he gets to run around on a playground. It was a big factor in the decision to go with his current daycare. I'd probably lean towards the other preschool if it had a super awesome outside area.
  • The playground is going to be a big deal.  I wonder if they'd give him (and you) some time to adjust to the older room before tossing their hands up and saying he has to go to the younger room?  Perhaps have an open conversation about the expectations they'll have.  Maybe let him have a trial day before you for sure make your decision.  If you get him in there and he's having issues, will you have time and will the teachers make themselves available to work with DS and you to get him ready to be in there?  Go with your gut on it.  If you feel like the more conveniently located school will work with you and DS to get him into the older classroom (which is what's in his overall best interest) then go for it.  If you feel like they'd just move him one day without giving you and him much of a chance, forget about them.
  • Since it's only temporary, I'd go with convenience. They can't go outside much right now anyhow (and at least for the next couple of months).  I think at that age, they can have fun doing anything outside, anyhow.

  • At the end of the day I decided the playground was a big deal, so we decided to go with Preschool 2.  So this means I go back to 3 schools next week.  It is temporary, it is temporary.  I keep telling myself over and over again!
  • Oh that sucks you are back to 3 schools again B.    It's just temporary, it's just temporary, it's just temporary.

We must do lunch again soon!
