WWYD: Bridesmaid dress

My sister's wedding is May 19th.  She chose a color and fabric, and everyone picks their own dress style,  so I have to pick and order my dress this week.  Even if I were pregnant right now, I would only be 4 1/2 months pregnant, so I don't think I'd have a huge bump.  But who knows if I'll even be pregnant at all by then.  How would you take that into consideration when picking a dress and size?  Should I just get what I want and figure I'll make it work somehow, or order what I like in a larger size just in case and figure I'll have to spend more on alterations if I'm not pregnant or not showing, or pick something with enough room for a bump (but I don't really love any of this style dress)?

Re: WWYD: Bridesmaid dress

  • I would pick an a-line or slightly empire style - those are universally flattering and usually can handle a changing waist line. And if it needs to be altered, those are usually pretty cheap to take in/let out.
  • I was a bridesmaid at 4 month pg, and I'd ordered my normal size not knowing I'd be pg.  The alterations were pretty easy.  I just had to have the chest expanded under my arms, and I brought the whole dress up at the seam where the bodice and the skirt met so it gave me a little more room in the waist area.

If you are borderline between two sizes normally, you might want to go with the bigger size.  But i think you'll be fine if you order you regular size.  Christine Hoyt is really good if you end up needing alterations.

  • Eeesh..  tough spot to be in.  You never know how you'll carry or when you'll start to show.  With my first pregnancy, I barely had a bump (and it wasn't even really a bump, just a slight extension of my stomach from top to bottom, I have a long torso and it was spread out pretty evenly in the beginning) at 20 weeks.  This time, I was visibly pregnant at 15 weeks, no question.

I'd pick a dress that you really love but try to not go for a supertight fit.  I would think that, if you were 4.5 months along, you could slide into some spanx and fit into it as long as it fit you reasonably now.  Baby bumps are a fashion statement right now anyway so why not have something that hugs it if you have it?  ; )

As long as you're about the same size everywhere else, I'd think you'd be fine in pretty much anything.

Then again, at 20 weeks along with Emmaline, I had already gained 25 pounds all over so...  yeah...  everybody is different : /

  • I was the MOH in my friend's wedding when I was 7 months pregnant with DS, who was a 9lb baby, and luckily she chose an empire waisted dress so it fit comfortably over my big bump, I even ordered my normal size and didn't have any alterations.  I'm a pretty small person to begin with, but still gained 45lbs during my pregnancies.  At 4 1/2 months you probably won't be super huge, but I'd probably still go with an empire style because if you are pregnant it will still fit comfortably over any bump or bloat you may have.  Sizing wise i say either stick with your current size or go up a size and then have it altered down...just depending on what your build is, I guess.
  • Most first pg don't show until about 4 months or so, though there are exceptions to every rule. I started to get a significant bump at about 19w with DS, with this one, I was in pg clothes at 13 weeks. As PP said, it's the boobs that will get you! (maybe wear the most padded bra you own to the fitting to get an idea).

I agree with the A-line as a good choice, but definitely pick something that you will feel fabulous in no matter what. I had a friend that was about 3 months pg at my wedding and had ordered the dress before she was pg, and she wore some spanx and you couldn't tell (I missed it, as she didn't tell me until after), and the dress fit fine. Her body type is similar to yours. It was a long dress with halter with a satin lining and a more sheer overlay, so it wasn't super easy to alter (couldn't alter the top layer I think).

  • I'm sure everyone's different, but something tells me you could get away with wearing regular clothes and whatever dress you want at 4.5 months. I didn't really start showing until my 6th month and would've been fine in a bridesmaid dress at 4.5 months. That's my 2 cents. I think you'd be fine, so get what you like!

  • I was in a wedding when I was 4.5 months PG with DD and I had to order the dress pretty far in advance also. I just ordered one size up and then had the dress altered to fit. I think if you can go with an empire waist style in your usual size that would work too, I just didn't have that option. I mostly needed the extra fabric in the chest at that point.

I was in a wedding this fall during first tri with baby #2, and I had a pretty form-fitting dress in my normal size. It was pretty hard to zip at only 9 weeks, but I think it is usually different the second time around.
