If you have been on a cruise.. I have a dumb question...
We are thinking about going on our first cruise. My dumb question is, if you dont book an excursion..... what do you do? Are you totally on your own once you get to the port? How do you find transportation? Does all this stuff need to be done in advance?
Thanks so much!

Mangia! My Family Table
we have done a few cruises and at certain islands we didnt have an excursion booked so we just got off the boat and their was taxis right there available to take you into town.
what cruise are you looking at? we LOVE cruising!
If you don't book them through the Cruise Line, then it would be just like any other vacation you go on, where you do your own research of activities to do & then either book ahead of time directly with that company, or take your chances on there being availability once you get there.
On RC, I'm pretty sure you can visit the concierge desk once you're on board & see what excursions are available & purchase your tickets at that time. But, imo, I don't want to be spending my time doing that once I'm already on the ship.
with the cruises we've been on, we booked our excursions ahead of time. As far as transportation, it depends on where you're going. Bermuda, for example, you can rent mopeds, which there's rental stands right at the ports. You can also take their public buses & there are stops within walking distance to the ship. They also have taxis which sit outside the ship waiting for passengers.
we've cruised. we've booked excursions on some places and not for others.
honestly i like staying on the ship. EVERYONE tends to get off and the pools are less crowded wait staff is at your service.they have drink specials on port days
we've also gotten off the ship and done our own excursions. like when we went to pr. we got off cabbed to the beach. grabbed drinks at this bar. then went back to the boat showered. and had dinner (since its free on the ship) then went out that night in pr
this is a VERY valid point. lol i will never forget the pub tour we did in key west. we went to margharitaville on our own. and i kept reiteratting to the cousins who stayed for a few more drinks after we left.MAKE SURE YOUR ON THE SHIP AT X TIME OR IT WILL LEAVE WITHOUT YOU. THEY WILL NOT WAIT FOR YOU. and seriously they made it with like five minutes to spare
We have booked in advance via the cruiseline in most cases. If we are going to be in the port for a long time we ventured out alone a bit. But we always planned to be back at least 2 hours before departure.
Also, depending on where you are going, there are some ports you might not want to be venturing out alone.
We were late getting back once but we were with a shore excursion through the cruise so the ship waited. Meanwhile I heard we left like 20 people in Aruba.
