Hey everyone!! For those of you who have dogs, how do you care for their teeth? Do you give them dental bones to chew on? Do you brush? TIA!
Re: Dog dental care
All of the above!
We like these chews & this toothpaste (I like the mint flavor better b/c it makes his breath more fresh, but he likes the poultry flavor better). We have a finger brush & then a bigger handled brush I got @ the local pet store (our dog is big, he's got a big mouth!)
He's had dentals (@ the Vet) before, but not in a long time (he had to have a tooth pulled the last time so they just did a dental @ the same time.)
I was just thinking about this as well. I usually brush their teeth with a baking soda/ water mixture until it is a paste and "brush" with a wash cloth. Lauren like to chew on all tooth brushes and Heidi acts like I'm trying to gag her. This is an easy work around and I can get in their and scrub a little bit. I also use some dog tooth paste from petsmart and an actual tooth brush to brush a little. I feel like they are need of dentals, but the vet thinks they look fine and they don't need a dental. I don't really use any of the dental chews or bones, because they eat them in 15 seconds and there is no way it does anything. I use a little mouth wash type liquid in their water that is supposed to help with plaque build up.
I don't brush their teeth nearly often enough. I was doing well brushing weekly (though I feel like it should still be more), but it has been a bit....
If you give them some raw bones a few times a week that will work similar to brushing their teeth, and they'll enjoy it MUCH more!
