thrift shoppers

do we have any thrift shoppers on here?

i've always felt dirty going into goodwill and the like because for some reason i instantly think of things like lice but since i've been losing weight, I'm having a hard time wanting to buy clothes for full price.. have you ever bought clothes from there? do you find good stuff?

Re: thrift shoppers

  • When I have the patience I can find things... I often do not! Have you checked out Old Navy clearance? They have a ton of stuff too, it would last you a little while.

  • I'm not a thrift store shopper, but feel it's worth mentioning that hardly anything (unless we're talking designer here) is full price right now. Stores are having sales left and right, and stuff goes to clearance so fast. I don't remember the last time I paid full price for anything outside of Nordstrom. I've gotten addicted to looking through the Target clearance racks every time I go and have found shirts for $5 and $10.

I have shopped a few consignment stores and found some pretty decent stuff, but considering you're getting used clothes, I don't think it's that much better of a deal than buying new clothes on sale.

  • I've shopped thrift stores for a long time, and never had any problems with quality or things being "dirty." Good will, value village, etc are great.

  • For more than 4 years I never shopped at a stores other than Goodwill and consignment shops. I loved the stuff I could find. If you are leary of Goodwill and those types, maybe start with consignment shops? They are usually a little less overwhelming.

That said, my bus was running late tonight so I popped into Ross and walked away with three dresses that we're originally priced over $300 for $54.00.

Since 2009 I've bought 2 dresses, one being my wedding dress, so this was a big step for me.

  • I'm not a huge thrift store shopper, but I will occasionally shop at plato's closet or goodwill. Like when I needed a new teapot, they start at like $30 at target, which just seems expensive for something so simple. I got one that looks brand new at good will for $8.

If you're looking for clothes, you might also try your local freecycle or craigslist. I <3 freecycle.

  • I know it's ridiculous, but I seem to get an ick factor from thrift-shopping for clothing at Goodwill (not other items though). I also don't have the patience to hunt in hopes of finding a gem (I have rotten luck). However, I love Buffalo Exchange and have been into other clothing-only stores. I guess it matters on how clean the store itself feels whether I get icked out.
