how much boiled chicken for a 60 lb dog?

I just got home from the vet, my pitbull had gone #2 in the house and had blood in her stool (lovely opening line,heh?....sorry)

Long story short, she's been on arthritis meds that may have caused her ulcers?.  Vet gave us meds and told me to feed her only boiled chix for week.  Problem is...when I asked him how much chicken she should eat....he wouldn't give me a straight answer.  He basically said enough to make her want to rest and feel full....Confused

okay, well, just thought i'd see if anyone had any idea.  She normally eats a little under 3 cups of dry dog food a day if that helps.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: how much boiled chicken for a 60 lb dog?

  • The boiled chicken won't be as calorie dense as dry food, so I would try maybe 2 cups twice a day to start off. After her tummy settles a bit you can increase it and kind of go on how she's acting. Can you add in anything else bland like sweet potatoes or rice?
  • thank you!!!  I'm not sure...altho everywhere i've read online has said rice with the boiled chicken, so i think you're on to something!  I'll ask my vet that tomorrow...
  • My dogs are about the same size as your pup, but they eat a little less (about 2 cups a day). My vet was also of the rice-boiled chicken-cottage cheese (for extra protein) opinion when the pups were having tummy trouble. I have no idea what the correct amount is, but I would feed about 1 1/2- 2 cups of this mixture twice a day. But since your dog eats a little more regularly, you may need a little more. For reference, I would give them 1 1/2 boiled chicken breasts, then rice, then a scoop of cottage cheese to equal the amount I wanted to give them. Or, if their stomachs were really out of it, I would give just small amounts- maybe 1/2 a cup at a time- several times a day.  If it was an "eat until they're full" situation, they would eat 15lbs of chicken at a time....
