Renting hospital breast pump?

Has anyone rented a breast pump from the hospital? If so, how much do they charge and do you have to notify them ahead of time?

  • I rented a symphony from elmwood with my first, no notification needed. They charge by the day and you do have to buy the attachment/tubing/bottles and breast shields which cost around $40.

  • I also rented from Elmwood pharmacy.  I already had the kit from the hospital.  I LOVE the Symphony pump.  We have the same one at work in the lactation room.

I was on the fence about BF and renting the pump was a great option for me.  I used it for two months and then bought a Swing.

  • I rented mine from Alegent Home Health and it was $67/month and the bag of accessories was $50 had I paid out of pocket, but while I was still at the hospital I was getting help from their Lactation consultant.  Before I left I told her that I was planning on pumping right away to go back to work and I was told to ask her if they could give me the pump accessories before I left.  She brought them right to me no questions asked and the $50 charge was now billed through my insurance!  I just called them the day I got out of the hospital and went and picked up up 45 min later.

And I don't know how many conflicting opinions you will get on this, but I started pumping the day we left the hospital.  We didn't give her a bottle for a week or two but pumping in those first few weeks really helped me build up my freezer stash because you'll have soooo much coming in.  It was also nice to have a couple bags of milk that are more colostrum for if H gets sick in the first year since it's supposed to help them get better quicker. Random side thought..

  • Maybe it was the hospital, maybe it was the NICU, or maybe I didn't realize I stole them, but I got two full sets of tubes and accessories and didn't pay for anything at Methodist Womens. (Or maybe if you rack up over $50k in hospital expense, they give you free stuff?) Anyway, I got one set the first night from the nurses and one set in the NICU when I forgot a piece up in my room. When I was getting discharged, they asked if I wanted to rent the pump and brought paperwork. I think it was $57/month through the hospital, and DH paid with his cc right there. I ended up using it for the first month before switching to my friend's borrowed one. Her's was just as good, but "hospital grade" made me feel more confident in the beginning.
