Ladies I have a question, I'm about to pump for the first time, to store milk for next month. LO is going to want to eat in about an hour. Should I do both breasts? Or just one so I have a full one for her in case she's ready sooner?
Re: pumpers...
What Nicole said.
Unless I was at work, I usually only pumped one side at a time. Zoe only ate on one side though (and still does). I developed a nice little freezer stash quite quickly. You should see it now. Yikes!
Months later I got into a routine where the only time I pumped was at night before I went to bed - both sides- (Zoe sleeps 10-11 hours at night) and twice at work during my 12 hour shift. I have recently started only pumping once at work and have pretty much eliminated the before bed pumping. I hardly pump anymore, and it is fabulous.
Ditto what Nicole and Jen have already said. Your milk supply is definitely highest in the morning. Pumping sucks - literally, but you get used to it. Also, some people respond better to pumping than others. I know a lot of people who just can't pump a lot, and others (like myself) who can mass produce for the pump. See how you do and you can decide how much you want/need to pump to cover when you won't be with her. I pumped for 8 months, because even the first three months when Kennedy was BFing, she wasn't very effective and I had a huge oversupply and was having to fortify her milk. Let me tell you, it was a very happy day when I was able to stop pumping!
Also, you can use a little bit of olive oil on your nipples if it's really uncomfortable when you're pumping. I found that to be a HUGE help in the beginning.
That's a great start!! At first I thought it was all cool to see the most I could pump at once. But that got old. I will say, it's pretty awesome to know that you're making milk for your baby though. I still feel a huge sense of accomplishment every time I go into the freezer to get another bag of milk. That will never ware off! Even when the fun of pumping does. lol
Whoever came up with the quote "there's no use crying over spilled milk" has obviously never breastfed.
I have cried over spilled milk. It is liquid gold!
3 oz is great for your first time, esp after feeding her!!
One of my coworkers sings that to me every time I go in the room to pump!
I will have to refer back to this thread in about a month or so. Thanks!
I would call Medela. They have good customer service. Does she sleep longer stretches at night? If so, she may have just taken more than she did yesterday afternoon. Also, if you were stressed trying to hold it, having a needy baby, and worrying about why you weren't getting much out, that can impact how much you get when you pump. I know a lot of people say that when they are stressed they couldn't pump well. Not something I experienced, but I don't think it's uncommon.
