pumpers...

Ladies I have a question, I'm about to pump for the first time, to store milk for next month. LO is going to want to eat in about an hour. Should I do both breasts? Or just one so I have a full one for her in case she's ready sooner?

Re: pumpers...

  • If this is your first time pumping, I'd let her eat and immediately pump after.

  • OK.  I'm nervous Tongue Tied  Is this going to be the weirdest thing ever?

  • What Nicole said. :) Unless I was at work, I usually only pumped one side at a time. Zoe only ate on one side though (and still does). I developed a nice little freezer stash quite quickly. You should see it now. Yikes!

Months later I got into a routine where the only time I pumped was at night before I went to bed - both sides-  (Zoe sleeps 10-11 hours at night) and twice at work during my 12 hour shift. I have recently started only pumping once at work and have pretty much eliminated the before bed pumping. I hardly pump anymore, and it is fabulous.

  • Yes.  Pumping will be weird and uncomfortable, just like BFing was at first.  You'll get the hang of it and find a schedule that works for you.  I'd start pumping after she eats for now until you have the flanges/pressure/suction/speed you like.  It prevents you from being overly full and in pain, trying to figure out a new toy.  Then you can start pumping between feedings if you want.  I always did both sides.

  • Pumping sucks. Moms who EP are my heroes! It is not very comfortable at first, but your nips get used to it, just like BFing. I just adjusted the sucking pressure to what I could tolerate. Now I can crank that bad boy all the way up and I'm fine. The whole thing definitely took getting used to. Eventually my hatred for pumping lessend, but I can't say that I enjoy it. The only time I have ever loved it is when I was engorged and it felt SO good to relieve the pressure, lol!

  • OK that's a big help, thank you!  When I talked to the lactation specialist at the hospital she said morning and nights are the best times to pump.  As long as I'm home do you think I should pump after each feeding?

  • You don't have to.  I agree about a.m. pumping and pumping if she's sleeping long enough at night.  Otherwise, I never pumped when I was home and had a huge stash for a long time.  The morning I could feed her (both sides) and pump (both sides) enough to feed her the rest of the day.  It was insane.

  • I think until you get used to it, and then just add pumping sessions. The morning and evenings are definitely the best times. Just remember to stay hydrated since your body will be making more milk. Even now I notice a drop in my supply if I haven't been drinking enough.

  • Ditto what Nicole and Jen have already said. Your milk supply is definitely highest in the morning. Pumping sucks - literally, but you get used to it.  Also, some people respond better to pumping than others.  I know a lot of people who just can't pump a lot, and others (like myself) who can mass produce for the pump.  See how you do and you can decide how much you want/need to pump to cover when you won't be with her.  I pumped for 8 months, because even the first three months when Kennedy was BFing, she wasn't very effective and I had a huge oversupply and was having to fortify her milk.  Let me tell you, it was a very happy day when I was able to stop pumping!

Also, you can use a little bit of olive oil on your nipples if it's really uncomfortable when you're pumping.  I found that to be a HUGE help in the beginning.

  • OK she ate until she passed out and I pumped that side and got 3 ounces.  I probably could have gotten more but I was satisfied with that for first time.  That was actually pretty awesome!  I've been dying to know that there was really something in there.  I know there is because she's getting bigger, but I wanted to really be able to see it.  After she eats her next meal I'll pump that side and then start again tomorrow.  I know it will probably get old but right now I feel like an amazing amazon woman who can make gold!

  • I saw this thread and automatically started singing "Pump, pump, pump it up". It can be your new theme song, Sara! ;)

  • lol!  After I had my c section I thought of the LMFAO song a lot, because to change beds and to get out of bed they told me to "wiggle" .  Also when breastfeeding they told me to look for a wiggle in her ears to know she's swallowing.  "wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle yeah..."  .  Damn song.  I definately put it in her baby book as the most popular song the day she was born.

That's a great start!!  At first I thought it was all cool to see the most I could pump at once.  But that got old.  I will say, it's pretty awesome to know that you're making milk for your baby though.  I still feel a huge sense of accomplishment every time I go into the freezer to get another bag of milk. That will never ware off!  Even when the fun of pumping does. lol

  • Whoever came up with the quote "there's no use crying over spilled milk" has obviously never breastfed. :) I have cried over spilled milk. It is liquid gold!

3 oz is great for your first time, esp after feeding her!!

One of my coworkers sings that to me every time I go in the room to pump! :)

  • I will have to refer back to this thread in about a month or so.  Thanks!

  • Today not so successful.  I wasn't getting ANYTHING then I realized that the little piece of plastic that plugs up the other hole if you are only doing one breast was leaking air, and I had to hold it.  (I have the Medala Pump in Style) Then I managed to get one ounce while holding it tight the entire time.  Milk seemed to stop after that and then baby started getting needy and I had to stop at an ounce :(  I looked on the Medala website and didn't find a replacement part.  Am I going to have to use 2 hands forever?  It would really help if I could do one at a time and have a free hand for baby girl...

I would call Medela.  They have good customer service.  Does she sleep longer stretches at night?  If so, she may have just taken more than she did yesterday afternoon.  Also, if you were stressed trying to hold it, having a needy baby, and worrying about why you weren't getting much out, that can impact how much you get when you pump.  I know a lot of people say that when they are stressed they couldn't pump well.  Not something I experienced, but I don't think it's uncommon.
