Are all pageant moms unstable?

One of my friends from HS is one. She's (or used to be) really nice and smart. BUT, her kid does those scary pageants with fake teeth and hair and stuff. I've never, ever, seen anyone comment on it. Today, out of the blue, she posts this long status addressing it. She specifically said, "to everyone who has a problem with my hobby." Now, I have judged it in my head plenty of times, but seriously? Why get so defensive if it's so wonderful. She actually said it's a competitive sport, like baseball.

  • People might be addressing her through a private message instead of FB blasting.

I guess. She kinda put herself of blast though.

  • I think that, especially when the kids start very young (ie, they are pushed into it without really having a choice), it does tend to attract a certain type of parent who wants to live through their kids.

See that is the problem right there.  It's not about the kid, it's about her need for attention.

    I caught that too.

Agreed. I don't really have a problem with mom's entering young kids in local photo contests "cutest baby!" or something, but I don't understand why parents spend time/money doing pageants when their kids can barely walk alone. (and one episode they tanned a 2 year old, wth?)

My thoughts exactly. I also read it as the kid is a hobby.  I have a hard time with parent's who put their children into something like this.

  • I wish I could post the pictures of the poor kid. Honestly, it's frightening. They are so photoshopped they don't look real.

Exactly. She's doing this for herself.

  • It should not be her hobby it should be her kids. I have no problem with it if its the kid's choice. I begged my mom to let me do pageants (along with dance, theater and voice lessons) as a kid but my mom wouldn't do it. If the kid wants to do it then fine but if its the mom making her kid do it then I have problem.

  • Pageant moms scare me, and every one I've met seems to do it for themselves, not their kids. Your child isn't a toy, get your own hobby that doesn't involve making them look frightening and dance around like a marionette...
