Help! My toddler won't keep his shoes on at school..need ideas

I am out of ideas. This kid doesn't like shoes or socks, he never has. Even when he was an infant as soon as he could roll over he would roll over to the other babies and take their socks off. His teachers at the time thought it was pretty funny, the parents not so much.

Fast forward to now, he is 22 months and every day is a struggle to keep his shoes on. His school asked me last week if they could put tape over his shoes in hopes he would keep them on. It didn't work. His teachers are also reading him a shoe monster book, so he will keep his shoes on otherwise the shoe monster will take them. That doesn't work, he just walks to the trash can where the shoes monster lives and puts his shoes in there.

We have bought every type of shoe out there, we just bought him a pair of high tops hoping he would keep them on. It's not working. I am fresh out of ideas. Daycare is frustrated by it and are also out of ideas, not to mention its law that he has to wear shoes.

Has anyone had to deal with this? Does anyone have any other suggestions for me? Perhaps a book to keep your shoes on? thanks.

  • When we were dealing with that with Avery, we discovered it was because her shoes were too small.  Embarrassed  We took her to Stride Rite for sizing and it has helped.

Will he wear rain boots?  Mine have both gone through rain boots only phases.

Yes, when he needs a bigger size he kicks them off all the time. I haven't tried rain boots. He is a big kid, 36inches tall and 35lbs, so we try to make sure he has good shoes. But if he kept the rainboots on I would be happy!

  • Have you tried taking him to the shoe store and letting him pick?  Luca has some hideous light up shoes, but he loves them..  He will even put them on himself!

I don't have kids so I shouldn't even be commenting... but this is what I was thinking too! Maybe try to make a big deal about big boys getting to pick out a special pair of shoes, that he gets to pick out his favorite pair, etc... then make a big deal about how cool they are, point out all the other little boys wearing their shoes, etc. I hope you can break through this battle - it's one of those things that doesn't seem like it should be a big deal but at the same time is because like you said, he has to wear them to comply with the law at day care! Good luck!

I might try the light up shoes. Someone suggested squeaky shoes to me but I just can't deal with that. I also wouldn't want daycare to either.

  • I think the light up shoes are a great idea.

I do give a side-eye to this "law" though. Because I'm pretty sure that's a load of crap. It's their RULE to wear shoes. And that's fine, I get why it's a sensible rule if everyone else is wearing shoes. But it's not a law. It's not even a daycare regulation.
