Blue Buffalo

Hey ladies I have been feeding my pup blue buffalo for a while now and I have notice lately that his stool has been loose .. i feed him the recommended amount on the bag and he was doing great on it not sure why lately its been loose... did they change the ingredients recently? He is eating the chicken one in the blue bag .... and he has been scratching and licking non stop lately .. I am sure it is the winter and dry skin since he does not do this in the summer.. just wondering if it may be the food tho.... should i try a new food?

Re: Blue Buffalo

  • I'm not aware of any changes to BB's formula, but I'm not a huge fan of theirs.  It's an ok food, but I feel that it's overpriced for the quality.  Not all dogs do well on all foods, so you might try slowly switching him over to something else.
  • The problem with dry dog food is that it has stuff in it that your dog's body is not built to utilize digest properly. Your dog's itching could be his body's way of trying to deal with all of the stuff it is being given that it doesn't know what to do with. The only way to really solve the problem is isolate what it is he's allergic to. It could be one or all of the things in the ingredients.

If you don't switch to raw or homecooked, the problem may never get better. If that's not feasible for you, or you don't want to spend much more money, try transitioning him to Taste of the Wild instead of feeding BB. Good luck, and I'm sorry your pup is uncomfortable :(

  • Mine are on Blue Buffalo and haven't had any problems.  You could add fish oil to the food to help with the skin issue or try changing to another high quality food and see if it changes anything.  Sometimes you just have to shop around to find one that works best for your doggie.  Good luck!
  • My pup has a sensitive belly and BB wasn't great for her.  She's on TOTW and has been for a while without issue.  We buy either the Lamb or Fish type, the others are too rich for her to handle.  TOTW seems to have a good reputation and is well tolarated by my dog.  She also LOVES it which makes me feel good - she's a standard poodle and can be finicky, but I want her to enjoy her food.

  • I fed my kids Blue Buffalo for a bit, my older dog also got the runs and lost alot of weight. My boys have sensitive stomach and threw it up alot. Not a good experience for me. I would switch foods. I like Royal Canin, its pricey but it is GOOD.
