Washer/Dryer Question

I have to go buy a washer/dryer for our house since the old owners took theirs. My mom suggested we get a washer/dryer that has a bigger capacity 4 cubic feet or more since then you can fit more in and easier to wash comforters and such without having to go the laundry mat. I was just pricing things out to find the best deal and these bigger washer/dryers are like $300-400 more than a basic one.

While it seems nice to have bigger capacity and we'll be able to get more laundry done at once I can't decide if it's worth it - anyone have bigger capacity washer/dryer and love it/hate it? Worth the cost?

Re: Washer/Dryer Question

  • I just have the front loader LG large capacity washer and the dryer that matches it.  I think it fits a ton.   Last night I washed sheets from a king size bed and sheets from a twin size bed in one load without any problems.  I can wash our king size blankets without any problems either.   I do take our comforter to the dry cleaners but that is because it's dry clean only, and I do that every few months - not a big deal.

  • If you can spare the extra $$ now, I'd go for it.  We don't have a bigger capacity now, but I can imagine if kids are ever in the picture, we'll want to upgrade to bigger ones.

Once G starts getting older, and her clothes start getting bigger, I'd think you'll be greatful for the less loads you have to do each week (esp. if more kiddos are on the horizon!)

  • With two kids, it's totally worth it, IMHO.  I feel like I do a lot of laundry now, I can't imagine what it would be like if we didn't have a high capacity washer and dryer!

  • I have a Kenmore Elite front loader set from Sears.  I *think* it's 4.3 cubic feet.

I just checked Sears' website - sale through 1/28/12.

Yup I saw those deals that is why I am planning on going to Sears at lunch since it seems to be the best deal right now.

  • I would spend the extra money, if you can spare it.  My WD is included with our apartment, but I wish it wasn't so I could buy my own and have something bigger.  With N getting older his clothes take up so much more room in the washer now and I'll have to break his clothes up into two loads before I know it.
  • We got a very basic washer about 2 months ago.  I didn't go with the smallest one, but by no means got the biggest one.  I can still wash our comforters in it.  But we're only two people we don't do a huge amount of laundry (3 loads/week, but the all are separated-- darks, lights, towels/sheets)  Lowes has free delivery in our area, and that made it significantly cheaper than sears.  Just FYI.

  • I have a GE HE Top Loader that I think is a 3.6 cu ft, but I thought it was 4+ that fits my King Size Down Comforter.  We only spent about $450 on it.

  • Home Depot is having an extra 30% off clearance appliances.  We just bought a 4.5 cu. ft. front loader for $470 and the matching dryer as well.

Oh nice - thanks for the tip. I will have to stop there too.

  • We got our set in Nov from HD.  They have free delivery and warranty is way cheaper than Sears.  If they have the same one as Sears they will price match.  We got a 4.5 HE washer and dryer and LOVE it!  Also, if you get HE you can get a water rebate.  Ours was $150
